A leading company in the oil and gas industry wanted to enhance the security of their pipeline monitoring solution by upgrading their existing serial-based communication infrastructure to Ethernet-based networks.
Securing Gas Transfer Stations Against CyberattacksRoozbeh Molavi
High-capacity natural gas pipelines are very volatile and span thousands of kilometers. The gas transfer stations along the pipeline are equipped with gas analyzers and PLCs, and send site data to a remote SCADA system. This system utilizes the public network for remote gas analyzer data acquisition and requests a secure tunnel between gas stations and the control center. The pipeline needs to install secure monitoring and control systems that are strongly protected from cyber attacks that may be either opportunistic phishing attempts or targeted attempts to infiltrate the system.
Moxa products are specifically designed for substation transmission and distribution systems. Moxa’s solutions include the advanced technologies that are fueling the power revolution. For example, PRP/HSR for seamless redundancy, SNMP/MMS management for power SCADA integrated network monitoring, IEEE 1613 and IEC 61850 certifications for substation applications, and IEEE 1588 compliance for precision time synchronization are key features that upgrade large-scale electric power networks to the next level of reliability and efficiency. All of Moxa’s products are toughened to overcome harsh environments, ensuring consistent operations even in the most demanding conditions. Tap into Moxa’s expertise in communication and computing to easily build an efficient and effective power grid.

Building a New Substation from the Ground Up- Start off on the right foot wit...Roozbeh Molavi
When upgrading to Ethernet-based communications, we were on the lookout for a relatively reliable and standardized solution that supported recognized redundancy standards. For mission-critical, time-sensitive substation applications, network interruptions as short as a few milliseconds can have a severe impact on system operations and jeopardize the safety of onsite personnel. For this reason, we needed a solution that could quickly connect our legacy devices to networks guaranteed to provide bumpless operation, even in the face of single points of failure.
When we shifted our retrofit substations from conventional hardware to automated, intelligent IEC 61850 equipment, we needed to find a reliable partner with products that could handle the complexities of protocol conversion. In particular, we were looking for serial-to-Ethernet solutions for connecting legacy Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and other serial communications devices to an Ethernet network. Serial-to-Ethernet solutions allowed us to extend the lifetime of our equipment, and significantly reduce the cost of upgrading to a smart-grid-ready communications system.

Long-Distance Wireless Communications for Pipeline MonitoringRoozbeh Molavi
Along the pipeline, there are several compressor stations, which are located 12 miles (19.3 km) apart from each other. Each compressor station serves as an aggregation point of the field site, collecting information such as pressure and gas levels from the RTU devices and sensors. To manage the assets from a central location, the company used to deploy a 900 MHz serial radio for its long-distance communications system. However, the radio no longer functions as expected, making managing communications from a central location difficult. As the pipeline extends many kilometers away from the control center, the company is looking for a cost-effective wireless solution that can help build a communications backhaul for the compressor stations and network operation center as well as a solution that can help aggregate the data from the field sites.
Building a Modern Drilling Chair to Help Lower the TCORoozbeh Molavi
The company’s previous solution was to show drilling parameters across four displays on the drilling chair. However, the PCs were located in the system control room, which was located about 100 meters away. The PCs in the control room were connected with the displays on the drilling chair via VGA cables, but this resulted in the signal transmission often suffering interference. The reliability and security of the data did not meet the standard required by the company. Furthermore, the performance of the PC and the panel of the previous solution were not designed to meet the needs of digital oilfields, which is a trend that the company is keen to embrace.
To build a drilling system ready for the next generation of devices that will facilitate digital oilfields, the company wants to implement a compact, cost-effective solution that streamlines integration and enhances system performance.

This document discusses a project in France to install monitoring devices on over 1500 heavy vehicles traveling over 1500 km of highways to enforce traffic laws. Each vehicle will be equipped with a GPS device to identify it, and sensors and cameras will record plates of passing vehicles to check for lawful compliance. Information will be sent over a high-speed Gigabit Ethernet network to a central control center. The system aims to improve road safety and manage traffic flow.

Regional Economic Outlook: Middle East and Central Asia UpdateRoozbeh Molavi
Growth for countries in the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan (MENAP) region has weakened but remains broadly stable in the Caucasus and Central Asia (CCA). Volatile oil prices, restrained oil production, and tighter domestic monetary conditions in most oil exporters add to headwinds from slowing global growth. Elevated public debt in oil importers limits capacity to address critical infrastructure and social needs, restrains growth, and leaves economies vulnerable to external shocks. A more challenging external environment increases the urgency across all regions of further growth-friendly fiscal consolidation and structural reform efforts to enhance resilience and deliver higher and more inclusive private-sector-led growth.
This recommendation letter describes Roozbeh Molavi's 2 weeks working in the technical department for LV switchgear and controlgear assemblies. It states that he used his high engineering skills in components selection and panels design, working focused and result oriented to find optimized solutions. The letter also notes that Roozbeh is always smiling and happy, and can be recommended for an international company.
