The village of Polovragi is located in the Polovragi Depression in southwestern Romania. It has a long history of human settlement dating back to the 2nd-1st centuries BC when Dacian settlements were discovered in the area. Today, the economy of Polovragi focuses on traditional occupations like fruit growing, animal husbandry, folk art, wood exploitation, and processing. Sheep and cattle farming continue to be important activities. The village is also known as an ethnographic and historical center near many monasteries concentrated in northern Oltenia.
