Emily Stowe was a famous Canadian who became the first female doctor in Canada. She was born in 1831 in Ontario and originally worked as a teacher starting at age 15, but left teaching after getting married in 1856. She later contracted tuberculosis and pursued a new goal of a medical career, graduating from New York Medical College for Women in 1865 and starting her practice as a doctor in Toronto in 1867, becoming a pioneer for women's rights and medical career for women.
