As students are entering the classroom play the sound that is on slide 2 – it is the friends theme
song.
Give each students 3-4 minutes to talk about each question then write the responses on the
board as you explain the powerpoint.
1. Show the question that appears on that slide that asks students “Why are your friends
important to you?”
2. Get students to discuss in pairs and then feedback ideas as a group.Ask students to
brainstorm in their pairs characteristics of a person that would make them a good friend.
Ask students to think about what circles of friends they are from and use the examples
on the board to explain what is meant by ‘circle of friends’.
3. Show the 1st scenario of the football friends on the board and give the students a piece
of paper.
4. Show the 2nd scenario of the girls on the board.
5. Tell students that being friends with lots of different groups of people can cause some
difficulties that they need to overcome and they have just heard 2 scenarios.
6. Tell students that we have looked at overcoming difficulties but ask them what are the
positives of being friends with different groups of people?

The students will use the rest of the class time developing a science lesson for elementary
students that target a single concept and use “hands-on” activities. Divide the class into teams
of four and each member will be assigned a task to complete. (Lesson outline, activities,
worksheets, assessment)

Have the students work on the web quest for the class. Start the class by looking for the
greatest drop for the following roller coasters: Mindbender in Galaxyland, Edmonton, the ancient
wooden Coaster in Playland, Vancouver, Montu, Superman, Scream, Raging Bull , Mr. Freeze.

help the students finish the webquest by comparing and graphing.

3. Have the students watch the two videos, then have them take a piece of paper and
construct a Venn diagram (Two overlapping circles.Have them title one circle “chinese
new years” and the other circle “january 1st New year” label the overlapping piece
“same”. Have them fill out the diagram with information that is unique about each
celebration, and have them fill out the overlapping section with things that each
celebration has in common. After they work alone, let them get into small groups and
share their ideas with each other. If you have some leftover time then prompt the
students to create a venn diagram to collect the response of the whole class. Have the
students hand in the venn diagrams.
