Shami discovered his talent after becoming high school champion in the 1500m in 2005. At that
moment he decided to become an athlete and help his family and community. His running
achievements also inspired children from his village to start running.
Winner Hamburg marathon in 2012 is definitely the proudest running accomplishment of Shami as
he won the race and came close to breaking his personal best. He is looking forward to return to
Hamburg.

3. Marilson dos Santos

Marilson dos Santos is one of the most successful long distance runners of South America. He is a
multiple South-American champion and has won various medals at the Pan-American Games and the
Ibero-American Championships. He also represented Brazil at several World Championships and
Olympic Games. He finished fifth in the Olympic marathon in London.
Marilson was the first South-American to win the New York City marathon back in 2006. He won this
prestigious marathon again in 2008. Besides these victories, Marilson is South-American record
holder in the 5000m and 10.000m on the track, and the 10k and half marathon on the roads.
His aim for Hamburg is to qualify for the Olympic Games in his home country Brazil. Competing in the
Olympic marathon in front of his home crowd, will be his ultimate goal.

4. Micah Kogo

Micah was the Olympic Games 10,000m bronze medallist in 2008 and is also a former world record
holder for 10k on the road (27:01). This time is still the second time ever on the all-time ranking. In
2013 Micah made his debut for the marathon with a second place in the Boston Marathon, later that
year he finished fourth in Chicago Marathon running his personal best 2:06:56. His best time in half
marathon is 59:49 which he ran in RAK in 2014. Micah’s personal best over 10.000m (26:35.63)
makes him the 6th
fastest man ever over 10.000m. Micah had an unfortunate year in 2014 and did
not run well in Boston and New York caused by overtraining. Since he successfully stepped up to the
marathon and with his fast PB’s in the shorter distances, it is only a matter of time before he breaks
his marathon PB.

Philemon surprised many by winning the Kenyan cross country trials February 2013. It meant for him
his first appearance in the Kenyan vest at the world cross championships. After the World
Championships he started his marathon career by pacing the men’s race in Rotterdam and pacing in
Berlin’s world record race in 2013. This gave him confidence and he decided to make his marathon
debut in Hamburg marathon. His training partner and course record holder Eliud Kipchoge told him
good stories this marathon. Philemon finished third in 2:07:07. His second marathon in Amsterdam
was not as successful as his debut because of an infection a few weeks before the race.
Besides being an athlete, Philemon is also part of the Kenyan police. Because of that, and because of
his length, his training mates call him ‘baby-police’.

6.Lucas Rotich

Lucas was born in Kapsoiya (about 25km from Iten) and grew up in a family with 7 children. When
Lucas ran his final School-Championships in 2007 his father took two days off from work and
travelled 200km to see his son competing. He is Lucas biggest fan but also his biggest critics as his
father believes that only position one is good enough. It took Lucas some time to explain his father
that the difference between school sports in Kenya and the world-class meetings in Europe is huge
and that he would need time to close the gap. When he went out to Europe in 2008 he ran decent
times on 3000m and 5000m (position 1 and 6 on the World Junior Lists) but his father wasn’t happy
about the positions he acquired. In 2012 Lucas missed the Olympics by finishing 6th during the
Kenyan trials which made him decide to change to the roads. However a knee-injury, which lead to
surgery in October 2013, has stopped him from running for a long period. But he recovered well, and
was fit enough to make his marathon debut in Hamburg last year. But it was also clear that he
needed some more time to fully adapt to the marathon trainings. So he did, and he bettered his
personal best by more than two minutes in Amsterdam marathon.

7. John Mwangangi

Unlike most Kenyans, John comes from a town called Machakos which is 60km south east of Nairobi.
His running skills were discovered during his time working for the Kenyans prisons. They advised him
to fully focus on running and so he did. He still competes for the prisons at the national
championship. Since last summer, John trains in Kaptagat, close to Eldoret. After being an excellent
pacer for some time, John moved to the full marathon distance in 2013. He has run a total of four
marathons and improved his personal best to 2:07:28 in the 2014 Amsterdam Marathon. The biggest
win for John is definitely his bronze medal at the World Half Marathon Championships in 2012.

9. Stephen Chebogut

Stephen started off his marathon career running the Nairobi Marathon in 2009, he then caught the
attention of coach William Kiplagat. After 12 months training Stephen came to Europe for his first
marathon which he won in Reims clocking a sub 2:10 mark. He then went on to improve his personal
best to 2.08 in Paris and a year later he won his second marathon in his career in Istanbul. Stephen
started running while he was still in school. He had to run to school every day to be there on time.
Later he was inspired by international athlete Luke Kiptoo to make athletics his profession. Stephen
knows the course of Hamburg already, as he was one of the pacemakers for the first group in last
year’s edition.

This time ranks him 8th
on the all-time list. He also ran five marathons in his career, with a personal

known 2:04 athletes as Dickson Chumba, Stanley Biwott and James Kwambai.

Gideon Kipketer trains in Kenya with coach and former athlete William Kiplagat. The past few years
school took a lot of time of Gideon. But after passing his exams, Gideon can now fully focus on his
athletics career. After solid marathons in Amsterdam, Tokyo and Paris, Gideon is now aiming for a
new personal best in Hamburg. Gideon is the younger brother of Valentine Kipketer, who was fifth in
Hamburg in 2012.

Ser-Od Bat-Ochir used to train without a coach in China. But he wanted to train in Japan in 2013 to
prepare himself for the World Championships and there he got in contact with the NTN corporate
team. He decided to join this team and started to train with them in 2014. This change has already
paid off, as he improved his personal best in Fukuoka to 2:08. Ser-Od is the only Mongolian athlete
training in Japan and is getting widely known in Japan. Although athletics is not a major sport in
Mongolia, Ser-Od is well-known and a respected athlete in Mongolia. Ser-Od is a three time
Olympian and ran six consecutive World Championships from 2003 on.

Jackson picked up running at a latter age and only joined a professional training-group at the end of
2012. Before that Jackson ran his best races in Kenya making top 3 in the majority of his races. In
2013 he made his marathon-debut in Osaka; he won in 2:12:06 in hot conditions. In April 2014 he ran
Paris opening his first half in 62minutes. He paid the prize in the last 2.2k where he dropped from 3rd
to 5th and from a pace of 2:06 to a time of 2:09. He bounced back by winning Osaka again in
November. He broke the course record in in humid condition. His winning margin was almost 3
minutes (ran alone from 17km). Jackson looks ready for a major improvement of his personal best.
Hamburg looks like the perfect place to do so.

15. Ghirmay Ghebreslassie

Although his parents never supported him to start running, Ghirmay Ghebreslassie chose for an
international running career instead of joining university. His first international race representing
Eritrea, were the World Junior Cross Country Championships in 2013, where he finished in seventh
position. After running some track races in Europe, Ghirmay realized that he had more talent for the
longer distances on the road and he moved up to the half marathon distances. He made his debut in
Paderborn in 2013 where he took the lead after six kilometers and won in a new course record of
60:09. Last year, Ghirmay ran a few strong half marathons finishing second at the National
Championships, first in San Blas, first in Göteborg and seventh at the World Championships (in a
World Junior Leading time of 60:10). Later on, he unexpectedly made his marathon debut in Chicago.
He started as a pacemaker but felt strong during the race and decided to finish. He finished sixth in
2:09:08.

Tesfaye Abera is probably the tallest athlete in the field with 1.92m. He made his marathon debut in
this year’s Mumbai marathon when he was only 22 years of age. He surprisingly took the win in hot
and humid conditions. He is now looking forward to the fast and flat course of Hamburg to improve
his personal best.

championships. He wanted to become just as strong as Haile Gebrselassie and joined a training group
in Addis Ababa. Hunegnaw defines himself as a hard worker and is eager to learn new things. His
hard work already paid off last year when he became second in Rome Ostia Half Marathon in 59:39.
He is now focusing for his marathon debut in Hamburg.

2011 and 2013. In Germany, he has won several medals at the National Championships. He was the
runner-up at the 2011 10.000m Championships, and has three bronze medals from various
championships in the 5000m, cross country and 10km. Last year he made his marathon debut in
Hamburg and clocked 2:15:39. He improved this time by more than one minute in last year’s
Frankfurt marathon.

Rift Valley in Kenya in a family of six. Nowadays she lives together with her husband and two
children. Her running career started after joining other athletes who participated in the
school competitions. This is where she developed her passion and interest for running. As an
experienced marathon athlete, Georgina set her personal best in 2012 by finished second in
Frankfurt.

World Half Marathon Champion 2012 Meseret Hailu comes to Hamburg! Meseret had a career
breakthrough in 2012 where she won the Egmond half marathon by beating World half marathon
Champion Florence Kiplagat. In the spring she improved her marathon PB by several minutes in
Prague, and decided that her next marathon would be Amsterdam marathon. Only a few weeks
before Amsterdam she travelled to Kavarna for the World Half Marathon Championships where she
surprised everybody by winning the gold medal. So she traveled in great shape to Amsterdam, where
she won in a fabulous 2:21:09. She also started her 2013 season really well by running an Ethiopian
Record of 66:56 in the RAK Half Marathon, which placed her 10th
on the all-time lists. Later on, she
took the second place at the 2013 Boston Marathon.

The proud winner and Course Record holder of the 2012 Hamburg Marathon, Netsanet Abeyo, is
happy to return to the streets of Hamburg. After representing Ethiopia at various championships in
the track, Netsanet made her debut in the 2011 Rome Marathon. She trains in the hills around Addis
Ababa and started running after being inspired by watching athletics on television. She enjoys
running and is happy that she is able to support her family because of her earnings with running. Her
aim for this year’s Hamburg marathon is to improve her personal best and win the race again.

Beata Naigambo comes, unlike many other marathon athletes, from Namibia. She already ran her
first marathon at the Commonwealth Games in 2002. Since then, she has improved her personal best
to 2:27:54 (2013, Dubai) and represented her country in various World Championships, Olympic
Games and Commonwealth Games. In 2010 she just missed the podium at the Commonwealth
Games, finishing in fourth position. In that same year, Beata was third in the Hamburg marathon.

Sylvia Kibet is one of the Kibet sisters and the cousin of Lornah Kiplagat, and the most successful of
the three sisters on the track. She has won two silver medals at the World Championships 5000m,
became fourth at the Olympic Games in Beiijing, fourth at the World Championships in Osaka, and
finished three times in fourth position at the World Indoor Championships 3000m. The marathon will
be a new challenge for Sylvia. According to Sylvia, Growing up in a poor rural area had strengthened
her mentality which is important to became a top athlete. Besides running, Sylvia takes care of her
10 year old daughter Britney, manages a petrol station, a guesthouse, a minimarket and a foundation
to support children’s education in rural areas.

Diana is the best long distance runner from Lithuania and the Hamburg Champion of 2013. She has
won three marathon so far in her career and represented Lithuania in several championships such as
the London Olympic Games and the Daegu World Championship. After winning the 2013 Hamburg
Marathon, she became 12th
at the World Championships in Moscow. After giving birth last year, she
wants to attempt a new personal best in Hamburg.
