Starfish reproduce both sexually and asexually. Sexually, starfish release sperm and eggs into the water to fertilize externally. Asexually, some species can regenerate a new starfish from a single arm after it detaches from the central disc. Starfish are able to reproduce asexually through arm regeneration because each arm contains all the tissues and organs needed to form a new starfish.
