Editing and transitions are important factors in producing reality television. There are several common visual transitions like wipes and dissolves that editors use to move between video clips. Transitions can also use music or sound effects without visuals. Effective transitions show the passing of time, change of mood, subject, or direction but should be used sparingly. Research found that reality TV shows mainly use fast cuts and transitions in openings to build tension and excitement through a teaser of small clips previewing the show, intriguing audiences to watch more.

• Editing and transitions is one of the most
important factors when producing a reality tv
show. There are several common forms of
transitions — the wipe, the dissolve, the split-
cut, and many more. Practically, transitions are
how editors move a scene from one video clip
to another. Transitions don't necessarily have to
be visual. They can also be conveyed
with music or sound effects. Also transitions are
best used when needed to show the passing of
time, change of mood, change of subject
or change of direction. Unless you're going for
a specific effect, it's best to use transitions
sparingly.

• Throughout most reality tv shows I found in my research that the main
transition used when editing was fast-paced cuts and fast transitions this
therefore allows tension to build and excitement to be made throughout the
opening sequence. Mainly the editing tends to consist of small clips which
allows a small preview of the show which teases the audience and
intrigues the audience to watch more which will result in watching the whole
reality tv show. Overall, throughout my research I have decided to use this
approach as this will allow tension to build through the opening sequence
allowing a dramatic opening sequence to build up who the winner of the show
is going to be.
