Edith Abbott By Aaron
Growing up Edith Abbott was born on September 26, 1876. She  grew up in Grand Island, Nebraska. Edith lived in a hull house with her sister Grace Abbot, Jane Addams, Alice Hamilton, Florence Kelly, and Julia Lathrop.
Family Edith’s parents were, Elizabeth   Griffin, and Othman Abbot. Edith’s father was the first lieutenant in Nebraska. Her mother was a women's leader and an excellent cook. Edith did not have any children or a husband.
Why was she famous? Edith was a famous author and an educator. Edith wrote many autobiographies. Abbott worked as a secretary for a short time in Boston and graduated in 1907. When she returned to the United States of America, Edith taught at Wellesley College.  She died December 14, 1957.
Fun Facts Edith often said, “ We of the  w est are not afraid to cross the frontier.” It meant that everyone has the same abilities. Abbot believed that all slaves should be free. She helped make the Cook County Bureau official in 1926. Abbott was the leader of the National Conference of Social Work. She got a special day named after her that we have celebrated on March 22 since 2003.
