ThisweekGnarlycaught upwithone of the mostdynamicgrime beatsproducersonthe UK scene
and aftera longtime of waitingwe managedtoland an interview withone of the mostsuccessful
producersthe industryhas everseen.
It has beenanexplosive yearforJRICH, havingblastedontothe Grime scene with some of the
biggesttracks everheard, it’shard to imagine thatlittle underayearago a manwithsuch talentwas
sittingina dark and damp garage tryingto findhisbreak.Bornin BirminghamJackRichardshas
alwayshada huge passionforgrime havinglearnttoproduce beats inschool fromas youngas ten,
“I love the genre andit meansa lotto me,hearingit fromsuch a youngage I instantlygrew ahuge
interestforitsoriginalityanduniqueness”.
At just18 it is scary to thinkabout the massive future thatislaidout infront of the young
Birminghamman, butsurprisingly itisverymuchsomethingthathe isn’tfocusingon,“I like tolive in
the now, that’sjust howI’ve alwaysbeen,I’maverylaidback sortof guy andI justtake everything
as it comes.Itake things stepbystep day byday.” Havingnow beeninvolvedinsome of the biggest
tracks on the Grime scene, JRICHisfocusingonmaintaininghisconsistency “forme, youhave to
keeptracks flyingout, there are so manygreat grime producersbuttheylackthe exposure and
whensome final getittheyare too busylivingforthe attentionratherthankeepingtheirtracksin
the lime light.”
Withsuch a mature headitis hardto see thisgreat talenteverfallingoff the railshoweverif there
was evera time where he would, itwouldhave beenwhen‘BrumMania’droppedlastNovember.
“That was the biggestmomentof mycareerand maybe evenlife, tothisdayIstill can’tbelievehow
the track just smashedthroughthe scene.”Having beenlongtime friends withMC‘Lethal J’the two
decidedtolockhornsand produce a track, little didtheyknow thatthe track wasgoingto reach
number1 in notonlyBritainbut infourother separate countries.“The trackishuge and most credit
shouldgoto James. He is an unbelievable MChe’slyricsare incredible.Irememberthe firsthourwe
spentinthe studioand I swear we didabsolutelynorecording,we justsatthere talkingaboutall our

knowwhenit’stime togo to work.”
HavinginvitedJacktocome andsit downwithusat our home base in Solihulltodaywe was
expectingan entourage of peopletocome burstingthroughourdoorsbut once again jackprovedto
showhisgenuine rootsashe strolledupto our studiowithone close friendandwithhistrade mark

Grime clearlymeansa lotto jack andhe hatesthe negative stigmathatsurroundsit, “Iowe huge
amountsto grime.Underneathsome of the harshlyricsandcrime talk, there are justnormal
individualsexpressingthemselves. AlthoughIam young, Ihave beeninvolvedwithgrime since Iwas
veryyoungand I can honestlysaythatI have nevermetan artistwhohas beena bullyor
disrespectful. Forme it’s all about the beatsand bars. I can’t stand people whosaygrime isshitand
full of idiotstryingtoact hard because true grime isn’taboutthat”.He continues,“of course youdo
come across certaintypesof individualswhodolie andcause beef butat the endof the day you
can’t turn roundto me and truthfullysaythatitdoesn’thappeninothergenresof musicandother
aspectsof life.Itall comesdownto the fans theylike what’sreal, theyknow whois lyingandwho
isn’ttheyaren’tstupid!”
Throughoutour time withjackwe couldsee his true passion,he isthe type of individual thatno
matterwho he iswith or where he is,if he is talkingpeople are listening. He hasa strongpositive ore
abouthim andbelieve me whenIsaythat he is goingto go far, veryfar.
