Introduction
 Congratulations on your newest family
member - your puppy! You want your dog to
be healthy, happy and enjoy a long, lasting
relationship with you and the rest of the
family. Training is an essential part of that
relationship. The time spent training your
puppy will reap uncountable rewards for
both of you for years to come. In addition to
the confidence to control your little beast,
here are some of the benefits of training:

Proper Dog Training Will –
 Overcome many behavioral issues
 Provide more freedom for walking and
exercise
 Allow less or no stress interactions
 Lead to better overall health for the
dog and you the owner

Overcome Many Behavioral
Issues
 It is so important that behavioral
problems are corrected as early as they
are detected. Excessive barking,
aggressive attitudes towards other
dogs, people or family members will
certainly keep you from having a
fulfilling relationship with your dog.

Provide More Freedom for
Walking and Exercise
 Once the behavior issues are resolved,
your dog can enjoy the daily walks
and exercise it needs and will spend
more quality time bonding with you.

Allow Less or No Stress
Interactions
 A properly trained pet that obeys and
understands your expectations will
naturally have better interactions with
other animals and other people.

Lead to Better Overall
Health for the Dog
and You the Owner
 Daily exercise and an obedient pet
means great fun and interesting
relationship with your new friend.

Lead to Better Overall
Health for the Dog
and You the Owner
 Training will provide boundaries and
result in acceptable behavior for your
dog.

Lead to Better Overall
Health for the Dog
and You the Owner
 All dogs should be trained. They
should be taught to respond to voice
commands well as hand signals. This
is important whether the dog is a
working dog or a family pet. Family
members will interact and spend more
time with a well- trained dog than one
that has not been trained.

Training Methods
 There are as many dog training
methods as there are dog trainers.
Which ones that can be employed
depend upon individual situations and
circumstances.

Positive Reinforcement
Training
 Relies on praise and reward when your
dog does something correctly. Rewards
can be food, a special toy or a pat on the
back along with words of praise.

Clicker Training
 This is the second most positive
reinforcement method in use today.
Trainers use a clicker and "click" certain
behaviors that they wish the dog to
perform followed by a reward. In the
mind of the dog, the "click" becomes
associated with reward. Food is often
used to reward the clicked behavior

Lure Reward
Training
 This positive reinforcement technique
uses a toy or food or anything that the
dog is attracted to (his favorite old
slipper) to teach the dog to understand
commands. As this training progresses
and the dog learns, the lure is removed
from the process.

Note:
 All breeds respond favorably to proper
training. None of the above methods
use cruel or inhumane tools or
equipment (choke collars, etc).

Know What Kind of
Dog You Want
 Is this going to be a family pet,
security guard dog or perhaps a bird
dog for hunting?
 Understand the nature of the breeds
you are considering.
 Rescue dogs also need a reason for
being with you, even if it is just going
to be a lap dog or companion.

Do Your Research on
Different Breeds
 If you are considering a particular
breed of dog do your research.
 Some breeds are more adaptable to
apartment living, for example.
 Some working breeds need a good
amount of exercise and space. Some
breeds are better with small children.
 With so much to consider, research is
very important.

When Should You Start
Training a Dog?
 Ideally, training should start when the
dog is a puppy. However, sometimes
dogs may be older rescue animals or
gift pets. It really doesn't matter. Dogs
can be trained at any age. A bond
needs to exist between pet and owner.
 Be the best you can be for you and
your dog. Dog training is the best way
to achieve this.
