The documentary aims to expose the different lifestyles of pets through interviews with charities like Battersea and the RSPCA. It will show both the benefits of pet ownership as well as the negatives like animal cruelty, neglect, and dog fighting. The target audience is animal lovers and dog owners specifically, as they will be able to relate their own experiences with pets to those shown. The age range of the target audience will depend on the channel chosen to broadcast on.
This document outlines initial ideas, conventions, and styles for a dog documentary. It discusses focusing on abuse, breeds, emotions, and how dogs are helpful. It considers using raw footage, interviews, archive footage, and text for deaf audiences. For style, it proposes voiceover, technical realism with natural lighting/sounds, and visual coding. It also reviews reflexive, expository, observational, and participatory modes seen in other dog documentaries. Potential locations discussed are animal rescues in Woking and Chertsey, and Battersea Dogs Home. Finally, it analyzes where dog documentaries tend to air—more serious topics on BBC1 and Channel 5 while lighter topics feature on ITV and Channel 4.
The document discusses potential topics and approaches for a dog documentary. It considers exploring animal abuse, breeds, emotions, and the helpful roles of dogs. It suggests interviewing people from charities like the RSPCA to discuss both positive and negative aspects of dog ownership. Possible documentary locations mentioned include animal shelters in Woking and Chertsey. The target audience is identified as animal lovers and dog owners. Finally, different documentary styles like observational, participatory, and expository are evaluated.
The document analyzes different TV channels as potential outlets for a dog documentary. It finds that:
1) The BBC has many documentaries online but dog documentaries are not extremely popular and only one search result was about dogs.
2) ITV airs some dog documentaries, supporting the idea that another could be aired and recognizing the popularity of dogs in the UK.
3) Channel 4 has the largest number of dog documentaries, showing it targets this audience. It concludes Channel 4 would best suit airing the dog documentary with its variety of dog-focused shows.
This document proposes a documentary about dogs that will explore why people own dogs and compare the lives of working and family pet dogs. It will be a mixed documentary utilizing interviews, voiceovers, video footage and archive material aired on Channel 4 at 8:30pm. The informal documentary aims to educate families about various topics related to dogs, including favorite breeds, the experiences of dogs in kennels and shelters, and the contrast between beloved pets and mistreated "dangerous dogs" deserving a second chance.
The document proposes a TV drama about a troublesome teen who gains superpowers but struggles to use them effectively to save his town from a new villain each week. The show aims to give children a more realistic superhero they can relate to while carrying messages of health, community, and environmentalism. It will feature fast-paced transitions and a voiceover origin story to engage young viewers in a style inspired by cartoons and comics.
This document defines factual programming as non-fictional TV that documents real events or people. It discusses various codes and conventions used in factual programming, including technical codes like cameras and lighting, and symbolic codes that convey deeper meanings. It also outlines different types of documentary formats, such as expository documentaries that expose a topic through voiceovers and archived footage, and observational documentaries that follow people or events without commentary. Popular news programs in the UK like BBC News, ITV News, and Sky News are also mentioned.
Vestron Pictures would be a suitable film distributor for our thriller. While smaller than major studios like Warner Bros, Vestron has experience distributing similar thriller films in the past. Partnering with Vestron could help promote their brand as they renew their focus on distributing contemporary films that appeal to younger audiences. Their previous partnerships with Lionsgate may also help boost the popularity and success of our film.
The document evaluates three TV channels - ITV, BBC, and Channel 4 - as potential options to air a documentary about dogs. ITV provides catch-up viewing but has ads, while BBC has no ads but limited dog documentary options. Channel 4 already has a dog-related documentary available and its search for "dog" returned around 50 documentary options, showing it openly considers dog documentaries. Therefore, the document concludes Channel 4 is the best choice as it has the most relevant content and audience.

This document discusses the criminalization of poverty in capitalist America. It notes that small crimes like stealing $5 are punished, while larger crimes like stealing billions in the savings and loan scandal are often not punished. It argues that the definition of crime in America is insane, as small-time theft is criminalized but stealing millions makes one a financier. It states that 30% of America's wealth is controlled by 1% of the population, showing the unequal distribution of resources under capitalism.
This documentary about Britain's largest family, the Radfords, who have 19 kids, uses a participatory documentary style with informal interviews of the family to show their daily life and dispel myths that large families live on benefits. Close-ups of the many children and handheld shots contribute to the relaxed feel. The family is shown at home and their bakery business that funds their lifestyle, illustrating their message that large families can be self-sufficient through hard work.

5. Ideas:
• When deciding what document mode to use we decided to
look at other dog documentaries to see how each mode was
incorporated.
• We felt this was necessary as seeing a common theme in
modes based around dogs will help us see what made other
documentaries successful, therefore helping us decide what
route would be best.
• For each mode we look at a documentary about dogs,
however we do not strive to replicate any other dog
documentaries so we will also look for differences we will add
to differentiate ourselves from the rest.
6. Reflexive
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omUIhrCcGqI
• We have two main presenters, who are shown in front of the camera and narrate throughout
• The theme is fun and light
• Raw footage is used from a dog show, to help keep the audience engaged
• Presenters interact with dogs
• Variety of dogs are used to keep subject of documentary interesting.
Expository
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xohGv6YRsHo
• Documentarian remains behind the camera
• Interviews with soldiers who work with the dogs, giving more of a personal effect
• Narration is used to ensure audience is being fully informed on what the documentarians want to get across
• Raw footage to help audience get more of a feel of the life of the dogs
Observational
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6AX4garACM
• The documentarian remains behind the camera
• Footage is all of the life of poppy the Labrador retriever
• Text is shown on screen to help spread out Poppy’s day, meaning no speech is needed
Participatory
• https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW8Z9m4jr-4
• Uses well known celeb to interact with dogs throughout
• Interaction with dogs helps get the information on dangerous dogs more suspenseful
• Interviews with people who have connection to dangerous dogs, meaning dogs are not shown continuously
• Awareness is an aim of this documentary, participation from the presenter is key for this to be successful.
7. Possible Locations:
Sos Dog Rescue- Located in Woking:
• SOS dog rescue does not have kennels and every dog in their care lives in a family foster home while waiting for a
home, however viewings are strictly done by appointment so if we wanted to look into this location, we would have
to organise a meeting.
• Woking is very local to us so mobility will not be a problem.
GSR Surrey German Shepherd Rescue:
• German Shepherd Dog Rescue Surrey is a non-profit volunteer organisation dedicated to
finding the right home for each dog in its care. They take in unwanted German Shepherd
dogs and provide shelter and care for them until they can find them a secure and loving
home. They promote responsible dog ownership and provide an after care advice, support and guidance service for the
new pet owner. All their dogs are kept in a home environment and not in a kennel, this will gives us a better chance of
seeing the real character of the dogs and to make a more informed assessment of their lives.
• GSR is located in Chertsey which means mobility will once again not be a problem
• Despite the location being very good the restriction of one dog breed may be a problem.
Battersea Dogs and Cats Home:
• Located in Winsor which is further than our other locations, however this
location offer a variety of information and available footage that make not be
accessible in the other locations.
• They aim to never turn away a dog or cat in need of help, caring for them
until their owners or loving new homes can be found, no matter how long it
takes. We would find out about what they do and how they take care of over
8,000 dogs and cats every year.
9. Dog documentaries
• The Dog Factory - BBC
• Dog Fighting undercover – BBC
• Dogs : their secret lives – Channel 4
• Britain's favourite dogs – ITV
• Dangerous dog owners & proud – Channel 5
• The dog rescuers with Alan Davies – Channel 5
• Cats and dogs : which is best? – BBC 2
George smith
10. What we can see from what channels
the dog documentaries are on
• From the research I done, I can see that the more gritty, shocking
documentaries about dog fighting, animal cruelty and dog trading tend to
be on BBC1 and channel 5. The BBC1 documentaries are always more
serious and they will take part in undercover filming revealing the people
who take part in these crimes. This is compared to channel 5 where they
have serious documentaries but will only reveal what happens and not do
much undercover filming to expose someone and get them in trouble.
• ITV and channel 4 have the more happy, light documentaries about the
lives of dogs and are overall more cheerful than most of those on BBC1
and channel 5.
• As our documentary will be on the darker side of dogs, we will feature our
documentary on BBC1 or channel 5.
George smith
12. Narrative of your documentary
• Within our documentary we want to expose the different lifestyles of having pets.
Through this we want to show the perks of having a pet and the negatives in which
animals are often included in. For example; animal cruelty, neglect, dog fighting
and other violent acts.
• We plan to include interviews with different people and charities in order to gain a
better understanding into the recent facts about the examples above. These
interviews we aim to complete with charities and companies such as Battersea,
RSPCA, Dogs Trust, Bruce’s Doggy Day Care and Dog Days Adventure. We hope
from this we would be able to gather a variety of information covering both
positives and negatives in order to be able to show both lifestyles in which dogs
tend to have.
13. Target Audience
The audience in which our documentary would be targeted at would be animal lovers
with the largest interest being received by dog owners. This is due to dog owners
being able to relate their own experiences with their pets and therefore being
interested into other owners relationships with their pets and the variation upon
these relationships. Dependent on which channel we plan to have the documentary
