Do Nunchucks Really Have the
Potential to Be Dangerous?
Nunchucks are unique martial arts weapons with a distinctive shape consisting of two sticks
connected by a chain. They allow the user to use different hand and wrist motions in order to
throw an opponent, hit them without being touched, or most commonly damage objects with the
sticks when they are swung.
They can be broken down into several categories based on how they were used historically.
These include agricultural nunchaku, martial arts nunchaku, and sporting nunchaku; these
categories were not always so distinct in terms of their purposes but have been combined into
today's modern understanding of the word "nunchuck".
Modern Style of Nunchaku
Today's sporting nunchaku usually attach one end of the chain to each stick. The chain is
usually fairly short to allow for greater control by the user. The nunchaku can be constructed in
a number of different materials, including wood and metal (usually an alloy of aluminum, copper,
or silver).
Some manufacturers have created nunchaku with chains made of mineral crystal material. In
some movies, they are shown attached to one stick and the other end is fitted with an object
such as a key ring or adapter for attaching the nunchaku to another weapon.
Origins of Nunchaku
The origin of nunchucks dates back between 1200 and 1300 CE and comes from Okinawa,
though they were originally peasant weapons used by farmers. It is likely that they were made
from split wood, as wood was plentiful in Okinawa. They were not used for fighting but for tasks
like harvesting and threshing grain.
In China's late 1500s and early 1600s, there was a re-emergence of nunchaku as peasant
weapons in Beijing. This re-emergence came when the Ming Dynasty banned weapons such as
swords and daggers in favor of using agricultural tools like pitchforks and sickles instead of
metal swords. However, due to the fact that pitchforks and sickles were significantly heavier
than nunchaku, peasants sought to use nunchucks as they are a much lighter weapon to carry.
Nunchaku Capabilities:
A nunchaku is a traditional Okinawan weapon made from two sticks connected at one end by a
short chain or rope. They are often used in self-defense and in martial arts. Nunchucks are on
the list of weapons that must be declared to law enforcement officials when crossing state lines.
They are often used as a weapon in self-defense and have legal protection under the self-
defense laws of many states.
When carrying one in your own state, it would be legal to openly carry it, but more knowledge is
needed to legally conceal it. They can swing at speeds up to 180 miles per hour, with the power
and force equivalent to striking a person's body with a heavy book or striking them with an
object the size of a baseball.
For most people, it would be safer to find a Taser or other non-lethal means of protection than it
would be to try to get permission or plan a legal way of carrying an illegal weapon.
What you need to understand about nunchakus is that although they are not unique in their
power and speed, their structure makes them different from most other weapons.
The danger level is related to the user's skill, but also the size and weight of the nunchaku used.
They do not have sharp edges so this can make them lighter and faster swinging than other
weapons which have very sharp edges.
Dangers of Nunchucks:
Nunchaku is illegal in most states of the US due to its effects on an individual's body parts when
used inappropriately. A well-made nunchaku can be quite dangerous to the user and to those
around him.
It is not a weapon for those who are not trained in its use. The chain or cord used in the weapon
can wrap around limbs and around the neck of an individual which can lead to strangulation.
One strike from a nunchaku on an individual's body, head, or face can leave scars that are
permanent unless corrective surgery is done. The same can happen when nunchucks are used
on an individual's body and they connect with certain bones such as those in ankles, legs, or
arms.
