Divali – Festival of Lights

Victory of good over evil and light
          over darkness.
The Story of Divali
A prince called Ram has a
wicked stepmother. The
stepmother wants her own
son to be king, so she
sends Ram to live in a
forest for fourteen years
with his wife, Sita.
One day Sita is kidnapped by a demon king. Ram
fights the demon and wins. He and Sita then
return to their kingdom.
The people are glad that they are coming back.
As it is a dark night, they light the road with little
lanterns called diyas to guide and welcome
them.
How we celebrate Divali in Mauritius
To celebrate Divali, my grandmother makes
many cakes and gives them to friends and
family.
At sunset, we say a prayer before we light the
diyas.
The lit diyas are put everywhere in the house &
even outside.
Nowadays, people use electric lights but my
grandparents still prefer the diyas.
