Electrical Engineering Technician
The Electrical Engineering Technician program is the only
one in the region that prepares students to design complete
electrical systems for commercial buildings, stores, banks
and schools. Students learn electrical theory, related math,
fundamentals of physics and drafting. In a classroom and
lab that mirror the professional workplace, they produce
engineering reports, correspondence, and construction
drawings. Power system designs include calculating loads,
specifying power panels, breakers, wires, raceways, and
all equipment connections. Students specify and draft the
building electrical service and equipment. On lighting projects
they select energy efficient lighting fixtures and controls for
each room, and draft fixture layouts and circuiting. Students
select products and design low-voltage systems like fire
alarms. For high-voltage projects, they size and specify
transformers and components to distribute power through
a commercial or residential development. Students design
their projects in compliance with all electrical and energy
codes and other standards. They use the latest CAD software
and computers to draft their designs, plans, schedules, notes
and diagrams. The program is challenging, and may lead to
employment in a high-demand and rewarding profession
working with engineers, contractors and utilities.
Hours: Mon - Fri, 8 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.
Program Length: Eight quarters (approximate)

Put your analytical
skills to work!
Engineering professionals apply math and science principles
to develop solutions to building and construction projects.
Using computers, engineering technicians produce and
analyze designs, formulate specifications and generate
simulations. Computer-aided design (CAD), a collection of
software programs standard in the industry, enables those
in the field to build three dimensional designs with movable
components and generate technical drawings to assist with
final project development. Bates’ programs integrate CAD and
other industry-relevant tools to support student success in
the workplace.
Civil Engineering
Students prepare for careers as civil engineering technicians
who typically work under the direct supervision of a project
engineer. The program environment emulates a civil
engineering/surveying firm, giving students practice in
many aspects of the profession, including defining project
requirements, conducting survey/field work, field engineering,
construction staking, designing, estimating, modeling and
client presentations. Instruction includes computer-aided
design, the preparation of engineering calculations, and
coordinate systems which include lengths, directions, slopes,
bearings areas, volumes, weights densities, moments, forces,
reactions, flows, and loads. Students learn to use a variety of
computer software application packages, including, but not
limited to Word, Excel, CadreLite, Hydraflow, SurvCE, Civil
3D, and GIS.

Fire Protection Engineering
Technology
Fire protection engineering technicians design and service fire
sprinklers, fire alarms, and other types of in-place detection
and suppression systems. The program is supplemented by
preparation for NICET examinations, enabling students to
choose from three career paths: Automatic Sprinkler Layout,
Fire Alarm/Suppression Systems Layout, and Inspection,
Testing, and Maintenance.
Students can earn an Associate of Applied Science degree, an

Child Studies
Welcome to our preschool family!
Organization for Parent Education Programs (OPEP) means parent support/parent education.
Being a parent is the hardest and most important job you will ever do in your life. It is a job a
person is never fully prepared for, nor can accomplish entirely alone. For these reasons parents
need support, and that’s where we come in. We are a parent education program that offers you
the opportunity to be intensely involved in your child’s education in the early years, as well as
learning parenting and leadership skills for yourself.
www.bates.ctc.edu/Family
Our supportive environment will offer you:
• genuine connections with others
• caring people who respect you just the way you are
• parent education seminars and training
• professional staff trained in early childhood education
Child Studies
Teamwork creates
a cooperative spirit
The Cooperative Model
At the heart of our program, you’ll find the “cooperative spirit.” Parents, board members,
preschool teachers, Child Studies instructors, and Bates Technical College all work together
to manage the preschool.
www.bates.ctc.edu/Family
Everyone contributes to the success of the program!
To help the preschool run efficiently, roles have been defined.
Working cooperatively in a co-op
• Know what it means to be a member. Read the policies, bylaws and handbooks. Know what
you have agreed to do when you signed the registration form.
• Learn about your committee or board position. Know who to ask for help.
• Stay informed. Read all announcements, newsletters, bulletin boards, work and field trip
schedules, and observe a board meeting.
• Help each other succeed and take pride in each other’s successes.
• Speak positively about each other and your organization at every opportunity.
• Try to do things with enthusiasm—it’s contagious.
• Ask questions when in doubt—go to the source for the straight scoop.
• Remember what it was like to be new and a little overwhelmed. Take time to introduce
yourself.
• Keep in mind that the facility you are in is not yours—it is to be kept clean and all rules
observed regarding posting signs, parking, which door to walk in, and use of telephones.
• Let your voice be heard! Answer surveys, put ideas in the suggestion box, ask for
conferences with any officer, teacher or instructor, and join a committee or the board.
• Support parents when their child is acting out—it happens to most parents at some point,
and it is always distressing!
Child Studies
The Child at Preschool
Some children readily adapt to preschool, others take their time. No matter how your child
reacts to preschool, allow time to do it in his/her own way.
www.bates.ctc.edu/Family
It is common for children to:
• Remain close to you when you are at preschool.
• Interact little with other children at first.
• Say little about preschool at home.
• Change their behavior at home as they try out new independence.
• Have more colds and illnesses from contact with more people.
To assist your children you can:
• Give the teacher any information that will help make the adjustment easier.
• Avoid building expectations too high.
• Suggest casually what to expect.
• Tell your child there will be other children of the same age, toys to be used, areas to explore,
and friendly, caring adults.
• Give reassurance that you will accompany your child to school and stay as long as needed.
• Provide comfortable clothes. Your child should not have to worry about staying clean. Dress
for messy activities and wear sturdy non-skid shoes for climbing.
• Preschool is a special time for your child and class time should be focused on him/her. The
impact of siblings on the classroom should be minimized. There are special family events
when siblings and relatives can participate in preschool activities.
Child Studies
Parents at Preschool
Often, adults are surprised to find they have adjustments to make at preschool, just as their
children do. Many new parents, as well as returning parents, may find themselves lost at first.
Keep in mind this is a common reaction and that in time, you will be able to settle down into
a routine that will feel more comfortable. You will also find that you have support from other
parents and the teacher in making these adjustments. Your Bates Technical College instructor is
also available to assist you or answer questions you may have regarding preschool or parenting
issues.
www.bates.ctc.edu/Family
Feeling overwhelmed:
• How do you function as an assistant teacher?
• Where are all the supplies and equipment located?
• What is the daily schedule?
• What are the procedures/policies?
All of this will be covered at the Parent Training Day for your class.
• Parent training is a requirement for all volunteers working in the classroom.
Feeling anxious:
• Will all these people think that I am an “OK” parent?
• Is my child “OK”?
• Will my child like preschool?
All preschool parents are involved in their child’s education because they want to actively
participate and learn more about parenting techniques and child development. All children
are special and unique individuals and are received into the preschool program at their level of
development.
You may feel isolated:
• There will be many people you don’t know.
• You may find it difficult to ask questions.
• Everyone else seems to know what they’re doing.
You can function smoothly if you can remember that:
• No one can learn everything at once. Interacting with children and adults, learning
guidance techniques and learning to use equipment and supplies is a continuous
process.
• Please, feel free to ask questions.
• The teacher, class representative and Bates instructor are resource people. Talk to them
when you have doubts about handling situations with children or need some extra help.
Co-op is a great place to find supportive parents, learn about parenting techniques and child
development, and participate in your child’s education.
Children are the most powerful learners in the world. Their capacity for wonderment and joy is
virtually limitless. The first five years of life are crucial for the social, emotional, cognitive, linguistic,
and brain development. - Foundation for Early Learning

about their work. “Would you like to tell me about your picture?” elicits discussion if the
artist is interested in sharing. If you are asked if you like their work, feel free to admire
the effort, the thought, the colors, the shapes, the size, the blending of colors.
12. Use DO instead of DON’T. “Drink your water, Lilly” instead of “Don’t jiggle your cup”.
13. Give children a three to five minute warning before inter rupting their activity. This
allows them to decide how to finish the project, or ask if it is something they can save
and work on tomorrow.
14. Allow children to work through social conflict unless they need help with possible
solutions or injury is a possibility. If you need to step in with three or four year-olds, ask
each child what they would like to say and then listen carefully. Then ask each child what
they think they should do about it. “This is a problem. What should we do about it?” The
solutions children propose are often very reasonable. If not, help them generate more
options and if they cannot, suggest one. With two-year-olds, distraction, clear messages
such as “No, that hurts!” and/or give directions on what to do. “You may choose a train to
put on the tracks but you may not take Jackson’s train.”
15. Model how to share. Remember that sharing is a concept foreign to most twos and just
emerging in three and four-year-olds. “Malina, you can help me build a zoo with the
blocks.”
15. Disapprove of the act and not the child. “Running away and hiding when it is time to
come in is dangerous and makes me very upset.” Rather than referring to her as a “bad
girl” or “problem child.”
16. Please refer all guidance issues to the teacher rather than other parents and do so
when children are not present.
17. Remember that we are all learning and you aren’t expected to be the perfect parent
or teacher’s assistant. It is also understood that at any time, any child is capable of
embarrassing their parents, and will no doubt do it at the most inopportune time. So
relax, and enjoy learning skills that will help you be more confident and effective parents.
If you have a question or concern, please let us know! We are here to help.

A crowning
success
Cristina Acuna ‘13
Dental Assisting
Originally interested
in becoming a dental
hygienist, Cristina
mapped out her path
to reaching this goal
while in a Federal Way
high school. She spent
two years earning
prerequisites at Brigham
Young University,
returned home, and
applied to a local Dental
Hygienist program.
After not being accepted, a member of her
church, a retired dentist, suggested she
pursue dental assisting at Bates Technical
College. While the two career paths are
similar, a hygienist concentrates on cleaning,
maintaining and examining teeth and gums,
while a dental assistant works chair-side with
the dentist, preparing equipment, assisting in
treatment procedures, and more.
“He said that Bates’ Dental Assisting
program was hands-down the best school
around here,” recalls Cristina. “I went to
an information session, applied, and was
accepted into the program. While I was
waiting for fall quarter to start, I volunteered
at a local dentist’s office.”
It was the perfect experience for Cristina
as she waited for courses to begin. “I
volunteered in Dr. Sheets’ office, and that
experience allowed me to see first-hand what
a dental assistant does,” she says.
Cristina fell in love with the Dental Assisting
program as soon as fall quarter began. “It’s
a blessing that I didn’t get into the dental
hygienist program,” she says.
Soon after she graduated with an associate
degree in summer 2013, she began working
at Geriatric Dental Group in Federal Way.
“I like variety, and that’s what I experience in
my office,” says Cristina. “We see anything
from a small filling to an extraction. I
particularly enjoy helping people. I feel like
I’m giving back to the community,” she adds.
“I see people when they first come in, and
they don’t feel good about their dental
situation. After working with them, I get to
know them, and I get to see them become
happier. They’re willing to smile.”

Infusion of grant money
expands aerospace programs
Bates Technical College will grow student capacity in the
Welding and Machinist programs because of a $411,771
grant from the State Board for Community and Technical
Colleges.
The Machinist and Welding programs will expand to
accommodate about 62 full-time equivalent students
beginning fall quarter. The new courses will be offered
in the evening to accommodate working adults.
This funding will help the college forge stronger ties with
the aerospace industry and improve career opportunities
for graduates of Bates’ manufacturing and aerospace-related
programs, said Brandon Rogers, dean of
instruction.
Bates is one of 21 Washington state community and
technical colleges who received grant funding to increase
student capacity in aerospace programs. The funding
is an important element of the state Legislature’s package
to guarantee the Boeing 777X would be built in Washington
state.

and other aerospace-related programs,

  • 7. Electrical Engineering Technician The Electrical Engineering Technician program is the only one in the region that prepares students to design complete electrical systems for commercial buildings, stores, banks and schools. Students learn electrical theory, related math, fundamentals of physics and drafting. In a classroom and lab that mirror the professional workplace, they produce engineering reports, correspondence, and construction drawings. Power system designs include calculating loads, specifying power panels, breakers, wires, raceways, and all equipment connections. Students specify and draft the building electrical service and equipment. On lighting projects they select energy efficient lighting fixtures and controls for each room, and draft fixture layouts and circuiting. Students select products and design low-voltage systems like fire alarms. For high-voltage projects, they size and specify transformers and components to distribute power through a commercial or residential development. Students design their projects in compliance with all electrical and energy codes and other standards. They use the latest CAD software and computers to draft their designs, plans, schedules, notes and diagrams. The program is challenging, and may lead to employment in a high-demand and rewarding profession working with engineers, contractors and utilities. The center has the potential to attract hundreds of international students to the Tacoma area, according to Tamarra Jeu-Harris, district director for ELS Language Centers. ELS students can conditionally enroll in Bates’ career education programs, and have access to college food services, child care center and libraries, which help integrate the international students into student life, and infuse diversity into Bates’ learning environment. A range of services are offered to ELS students. Besides providing a quality academic program, ELS also arranges activities for students to help them meet Americans and experience American culture. For students in our English for Academic Purposes program, college counseling is available. • 28. Welcome to our preschool family! Organization for Parent Education Programs (OPEP) means parent support/parent education. Being a parent is the hardest and most important job you will ever do in your life. It is a job a person is never fully prepared for, nor can accomplish entirely alone. For these reasons parents need support, and that’s where we come in. We are a parent education program that offers you the opportunity to be intensely involved in your child’s education in the early years, as well as learning parenting and leadership skills for yourself. www.bates.ctc.edu/Family Our supportive environment will offer you: • genuine connections with others • caring people who respect you just the way you are • parent education seminars and training • professional staff trained in early childhood education
  • 30. Teamwork creates a cooperative spirit The Cooperative Model At the heart of our program, you’ll find the “cooperative spirit.” Parents, board members, preschool teachers, Child Studies instructors, and Bates Technical College all work together to manage the preschool. www.bates.ctc.edu/Family Everyone contributes to the success of the program! To help the preschool run efficiently, roles have been defined. Working cooperatively in a co-op • Know what it means to be a member. Read the policies, bylaws and handbooks. Know what you have agreed to do when you signed the registration form. • Learn about your committee or board position. Know who to ask for help. • Stay informed. Read all announcements, newsletters, bulletin boards, work and field trip schedules, and observe a board meeting. Take time to introduce yourself. • Keep in mind that the facility you are in is not yours—it is to be kept clean and all rules observed regarding posting signs, parking, which door to walk in, and use of telephones. • Let your voice be heard! Answer surveys, put ideas in the suggestion box, ask for conferences with any officer, teacher or instructor, and join a committee or the board. • Support parents when their child is acting out—it happens to most parents at some point, and it is always distressing!
  • 32. The Child at Preschool Some children readily adapt to preschool, others take their time. No matter how your child reacts to preschool, allow time to do it in his/her own way. www.bates.ctc.edu/Family It is common for children to: • Remain close to you when you are at preschool. • Interact little with other children at first. • Say little about preschool at home. • Change their behavior at home as they try out new independence. • Have more colds and illnesses from contact with more people. To assist your children you can: • Give the teacher any information that will help make the adjustment easier. • Avoid building expectations too high. • Suggest casually what to expect. • Tell your child there will be other children of the same age, toys to be used, areas to explore, and friendly, caring adults. • Give reassurance that you will accompany your child to school and stay as long as needed. • Provide comfortable clothes. Your child should not have to worry about staying clean. Dress for messy activities and wear sturdy non-skid shoes for climbing. • Preschool is a special time for your child and class time should be focused on him/her. The impact of siblings on the classroom should be minimized. There are special family events when siblings and relatives can participate in preschool activities.
  • 34. Parents at Preschool Often, adults are surprised to find they have adjustments to make at preschool, just as their children do. Many new parents, as well as returning parents, may find themselves lost at first. Keep in mind this is a common reaction and that in time, you will be able to settle down into a routine that will feel more comfortable. You will also find that you have support from other parents and the teacher in making these adjustments. Your Bates Technical College instructor is also available to assist you or answer questions you may have regarding preschool or parenting issues. www.bates.ctc.edu/Family Feeling overwhelmed: • How do you function as an assistant teacher? • Where are all the supplies and equipment located? • What is the daily schedule? • What are the procedures/policies? All of this will be covered at the Parent Training Day for your class. • Parent training is a requirement for all volunteers working in the classroom. Feeling anxious: • Will all these people think that I am an “OK” parent? • Is my child “OK”? • Will my child like preschool? All preschool parents are involved in their child’s education because they want to actively participate and learn more about parenting techniques and child development. All children are special and unique individuals and are received into the preschool program at their level of development. You may feel isolated: • There will be many people you don’t know. • You may find it difficult to ask questions. • Everyone else seems to know what they’re doing.
  • 35. You can function smoothly if you can remember that: • No one can learn everything at once. Interacting with children and adults, learning guidance techniques and learning to use equipment and supplies is a continuous process. • Please, feel free to ask questions. • The teacher, class representative and Bates instructor are resource people. Talk to them when you have doubts about handling situations with children or need some extra help. Co-op is a great place to find supportive parents, learn about parenting techniques and child development, and participate in your child’s education. Children are the most powerful learners in the world. Their capacity for wonderment and joy is virtually limitless. The first five years of life are crucial for the social, emotional, cognitive, linguistic, and brain development. - Foundation for Early Learning No one can learn everything at once. Interacting with children and adults, learning guidance techniques and learning Child Studies to use equipment and supplies is a continuous process.
  • 37. about their work. “Would you like to tell me about your picture?” elicits discussion if the artist is interested in sharing. If you are asked if you like their work, feel free to admire the effort, the thought, the colors, the shapes, the size, the blending of colors. 12. Use DO instead of DON’T. “Drink your water, Lilly” instead of “Don’t jiggle your cup”. 13. Give children a three to five minute warning before inter rupting their activity. This allows them to decide how to finish the project, or ask if it is something they can save and work on tomorrow. 14. Allow children to work through social conflict unless they need help with possible solutions or injury is a possibility. If you need to step in with three or four year-olds, ask each child what they would like to say and then listen carefully. Then ask each child what they think they should do about it. “This is a problem. What should we do about it?” The solutions children propose are often very reasonable. If not, help them generate more options and if they cannot, suggest one. With two-year-olds, distraction, clear messages such as “No, that hurts!” and/or give directions on what to do. “You may choose a train to put on the tracks but you may not take Jackson’s train.” 15. Model how to share. Remember that sharing is a concept foreign to most twos and just emerging in three and four-year-olds. “Malina, you can help me build a zoo with the blocks.” 15. Disapprove of the act and not the child. “Running away and hiding when it is time to come in is dangerous and makes me very upset.” Rather than referring to her as a “bad girl” or “problem child.” 16. Please refer all guidance issues to the teacher rather than other parents and do so when children are not present. 17. Remember that we are all learning and you aren’t expected to be the perfect parent or teacher’s assistant. It is also understood that at any time, any child is capable of embarrassing their parents, and will no doubt do it at the most inopportune time. So relax, and enjoy learning skills that will help you be more confident and effective parents. If you have a question or concern, please let us know! We are here to help. A crowning success Cristina Acuna ‘13 Dental Assisting Originally interested in becoming a dental hygienist, Cristina mapped out her path to reaching this goal while in a Federal Way high school. She spent two years earning prerequisites at Brigham Young University, returned home, and applied to a local Dental Hygienist program. After not being accepted, a member of her church, a retired dentist, suggested she pursue dental assisting at Bates Technical College. While the two career paths are similar, a hygienist concentrates on cleaning, maintaining and examining teeth and gums, while a dental assistant works chair-side with the dentist, preparing equipment, assisting in treatment procedures, and more. “He said that Bates’ Dental Assisting program was hands-down the best school around here,” recalls Cristina. “I went to an information session, applied, and was accepted into the program. While I was waiting for fall quarter to start, I volunteered at a local dentist’s office.” It was the perfect experience for Cristina as she waited for courses to begin. “I volunteered in Dr. Sheets’ office, and that experience allowed me to see first-hand what a dental assistant does,” she says. Cristina fell in love with the Dental Assisting program as soon as fall quarter began. “It’s a blessing that I didn’t get into the dental hygienist program,” she says. Soon after she graduated with an associate degree in summer 2013, she began working at Geriatric Dental Group in Federal Way. “I like variety, and that’s what I experience in my office,” says Cristina. “We see anything from a small filling to an extraction. I particularly enjoy helping people. I feel like I’m giving back to the community,” she adds. “I see people when they first come in, and they don’t feel good about their dental situation. After working with them, I get to know them, and I get to see them become happier. They’re willing to smile.” Fall Quarter General Education Course Schedule Subject & Course Title Item # Location Hours Online MATHEMATICS - CONTINUED MATH 087, Pre-Algebra 2 6127 6140 6141 6144 6145 BDC BDC BDC BDC BSC 12:15 p.m. 12:15 p.m. 1:40 p.m. 10:15 a.m. 1:40 p.m. MATH 092, Elementary Algebra 6540 6541 6543 6552 6553 6554 6555 6542 BDC BDC BDC BSC BSC BSC BSC BDC 12:15 p.m. 1:40 p.m. 8:45 a.m. 8:45 a.m. 10:15 a.m. 12:15 p.m. 3:10 p.m. Online, ARR MATH 096 Intro to Business Math 6568 BDC 12:15 p.m. MATH 098, Intermediate Algebra 6577 6578 6579 6580 6581 BDC BSC BSC BSC 1:40 p.m. 8:45 a.m. 3:10 p.m. 1:40 p.m. Online, ARR MATH& 141, Pre-Calculus 1 6777 6778 BDC BDC 1:40 p.m. Online, ARR MATH& 142, Pre-Calculus II 6788 BDC 12:15 p.m. MATH& 146, Intro to Statistics 6795 6796 6797 BSC BDC BDC 12:15 p.m. 10:15 a.m. Online, ARR MATH 171, Technical Math 6810 6811 BDC BSC 1:40 p.m. 1:40 p.m. MATH 172, Applied Business Math 6815 BDC Online, ARR MATH 173, Math Concepts 6820 BSC 5:30 p.m. SCIENCE BIOL 171, Human Anatomy and Physiology 6862 BDC 1:40 p.m. CHEM&121, Intro to Chemistry 6833 BDC 8:45 a.m. 11
