The KBS Star arrived at the U.S. Port of Newport News, Virginia carrying 25,000 metric tons of cement produced in Bulgaria by Italcementi's Devnya Cement plant. This marked the first cement import by Essroc since 2007 due to increased demand from the recovering construction market. Essroc's president said the additional supply from Devnya Cement will allow them to meet customer needs and increase their market share. The imported cement will supplement existing supply from Essroc's plant in West Virginia. Essroc verified the quality of the Devnya Cement and will help customers transition to the new product.
1. On Monday, September 7, the KBS Star arrived in the U.S.
Port of Newport News, Va., loaded with 25,000 metric tons
of cement produced at Italcementi’s Devnya Cement plant in
Bulgaria. The vessel’s arrival marks the first import of portland
cement by Essroc since the economic downturn in 2007.
“The import of cement from Devnya demonstrates the
measurable recovery of the North American construction
market,” said Alex Car, Essroc president and CEO. “We
continue to operate in a near sold-out environment. The
additional supply of portland cement from our sister company
will allow Essroc to fulfill the needs of our customers and
grow our share of the cement market.”
The Newport News terminal serves Essroc’s Mid-Atlantic
market and the imported cement will augment customers
currently served by the Martinsburg, W.Va., plant. Essroc’s
Quality and Technical Service teams verified the quality of
the imported Devnya Cement product and will work with
customers to assist in product transition.
The newly built Devnya Cement facility is one the most modern
cement plants in the Italcementi network and has state-of-the-
art production capabilities.
“It is a major commitment to begin importing and validates
the robust construction and economic recovery of the U.S.
market,” said Car. “With strong forecasted demand and to
ensure our customers an uninterrupted supply of cement, we
anticipate placing additional orders in the foreseeable future.”

Italcementi Group entered the Bulgarian market in 1998 through the acquisition of Devnya Cement, a company with a production
facility situated near Varna, the largest port in the country. At the beginning of 1999, the Group acquired control of Vulkan Cement,
a production plant located near Dimitrovgrad, in South-Central Bulgaria, currently operating as a grinding center and a distribution
hub. Consequently, Italcementi Group Bulgaria is the local market leader with a production capacity of over 2 million tons of cement
per year. Mr. Alex Car served as General Director of the Devnya Cement operation from July 2007 to August 2010.
