Presentation for the 2nd International Symposium for Sustainable Design. Introducing THE BRIDGE sustainable design methodology and design projects to support it.
6. 'We should go about in the manner of a bee collecting nectar from a flower: The bee harms neither the fragrance nor the beauty of the flower, but gathers nectar and turns it into sweet honey.' Ahranat – a buddhidt saint
HAKOL DVASH
The encounter with this phrase was an important and meaningful moment in my life. It was while I was doing my Master’s thesis at the DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN, asking how we might learn from indigenous ways of life to approach sustainable design in a more in-depth way.
It all started when I arrived to my Master studies at the DAE where in addition to the great knowledge and inspiration I encountered, my heart was allitle bit broken when encountering the some-what technological approach to sustainable design when I had the strong memory of the simple but genius way of life I experience during a long stay in India.
To my view, our set of mind, or our “gut approach” to our practice is what determines more than anything how we apply our practice.
If we adpot the right set of mind we approach every challenge in a way that will lead to design that aim not just to “minimize our impact” or to do “less bad”, but to actually create pure good or if you wish pure honey.
In my journey I search for ways to learn from the world of people that remembered that they are nature, and nature is them, and lived the interdependent quality of it. Aiming to learn from the set of mind that led the way they dwelled on earth and translate it to communicative strategies that can help us function better as the designers of objects, services and even cities and states. How can we encourage design action that aims to respond to the challenge which is set to us by the honey bee?
Since designers have the unique quality to envision, illustrate and enable the realization of objects and behaviors, we can play a central role in designing new life habits that thoroughly re-think the encounter between man, object and environment. In my perception, the core of Sustainable Design is precisely that – envisioning and realizing new ways to live and prosper on the planet
The way I communicate this aspiration, is the phrase “DESIGNING SUSTAIANBLE PROSPERITY”. It is a play of words from the definition of TNS
In my exploration I am guided by a sustainable design methodology named THE BRIDGE. This methodology was developed as part of my master thesis at the Design Academy EINDHOVEN. It was inspired from indigenous knowledge and indigenous living patterns. The methodology presents 5 design strategies offering a holistic, yet applicable, view to sustainable design.
I will not go into the process - It was elaborated in an extensive process using design research tools Based on three key words, - It was elaborated in an extensive process using design research tools – The methodology presents 5 design strategies offering a holistic, yet applicable, view to sustainable design.
I will briefly go through the strategies and explain them through design projects that where developed with their inspiration. Some is my own work, some of our students at HIT and others at short Bridge workshops which I gave in Israel and in Mexico.
WATERFULL is an effective private upper-well that can be integrated in the home environment as a multi-season water collector as well as a shading element. WATERFULL creates a self-sufficient platform that enables the home-user to collect dew and rain water for everyday needs. Doing so, one is able to make use of the natural abundance of water available in his surroundings.

Above all, the journey towards design for sustainable prosperity challenges us to encompass a wide scope of search that enables us to apply applicative actions within it. And apply our insights to objects and services. Every where I go I encounter designers that want to act within the field of sustainable design but although their will and motivation are puzzled in front of this vast field and at the end invest their creative potentials and motivation in the wrong place – sometimes even creating more damage than benefit.
sustainable design methodologies such as THE BRIDGE can have great impact in supporting designers in grasping the essence of sustainable design and, at the same time, identifying their unique applicable approach within it. Working with a good set of strategies that were developed with the motivation to act as a bridge between them and the vast field of sustainability, can have great impact.
As a community that is exploring the practice of design for sustainability for quite some years already, We are responsible to create applicative tools that will enable designers to join and have meaningful actions in the biggest task design ever encountered.
Utilizing the unique ability of designers to envision, illustrate and enable the realization of more sustainable lifehabit, will take us closer to
If we manage to inspire the critical mass of designers to join the genuine quest towards sustainable prosperity, I believe we can make that giant leap to a society that can be nourished by the nectar of the world, turn it into sweet honey.
