Paula Scher is a renowned designer known for creating the Citibank and Public Theater logos. She attended school in the 1970s where she was inspired by expressive typography. Paula would paint designs and typography by hand, believing it preserved the craft of design. Her intricate artwork shows the hard work put into each piece. Although technology has advanced, Paula stayed "old school" by continuing to paint designs by hand, which makes her unique from other designers.
1. PAULA
SCHER
PAULA SCHER is a
very well known designer and
painter. She is mainly known
for creating the Citibank logo
as well as the Public Theater
logo. The design and typog-
raphy of her work because so
popular that it started to be-
come the new style and was
seen to be everywhere.
Paula went to school in the
1970’s and was involved in
expressive typography and
was inspired by rolling zigzag
papers. She also went to
antique stores just to look at
the typography. Paula is a
very talented designer and is
also pretty old school. She
used to paint typography by
hand when making record
covers because painting was
very special to her since she
believed that was what was
left of craft.
Paula inspires me in numer-
ous ways. Her artwork is so
intricate and you can see all
of the hard work that is put
into each and every piece.
With technology taking over,
and many designers working
on their computers, Paula
seemed to stay old school,
which makes me appreciate
her so much more.
She would paint everything
by hand, including the typog-
raphy. She was very crafty
and she felt that was all she
had to hold onto since the
world has become so ad-
vanced and virtual. That is
what makes her unique from
the other designers. Although
I am more of a simple design-
er, I enjoy Paula’s artwork.
She takes the typography and
creates illustrations with them.
Looking through Paula’s art,
it is noticeable that her pieces
are very loud and sometimes
very busy, but they seem to
work and that is very interest-
ing to me. Every designer has
their own touch and identity;
Paula’s being that she does
everything by hand. She is
the designer that stands out
the most to me.
