The carbon regeneration in the water column of
the Cariaco Basin (Venezuela) was investigated
using a regression model of total alkalinity (TA)
and the concentration of total inorganic carbon
(TCO2
). Primary productivity (PP) was determined
from the inorganic carbon fraction assimilated
by phytoplankton and the variation of the 22 and
23°C isotherm was used as an indicator of coastal
upwelling. The results indicate that CO2
levels were
lowest (1962 µmol/kg) at the surface and increased
to 2451 µmol/kg below the oxic-anoxic redox
interface. The vertical regeneration distribution of
carbon was dominated (82%) by organic carbon
originating from the soft tissue of photosynthetic
organisms, whereas 18% originated from the
dissolution of biogenic calcite. The regeneration
of organic carbon was highest in the surface layer
in agreement with the primary productivity values.
However, at the oxic-anoxic interface a second more
intense maximum was detected (70-80%), generated
by chemotrophic respiration of organic material
by microorganisms. The percentages in the anoxic
layers were lower than in the oxic zone because
aerobic decomposition occurs more rapidly than
anaerobic respiration of organic material because
more labile fractions of organic carbon have already

En esta investigación se determinaron las fracciones P-adsorbida o lábil (F1), P-autigénica (F2), P-asociada a óxidos (F3), P-detrítica (F4) y P-orgánica (F5), y la biodisponibilidad del fósforo en los sedimentos del Golfo de Paria, Venezuela. La concentración de fósforo total (PT) osciló entre 3,93-4,97 μmol P/g, y se encuentra principalmente en forma detrítica y orgánica. Se evidencian diferentes mecanismos de transporte y mecanismos posdepositacionales de partículas de composición química variable, que inducen a un gradiente decreciente en las concentraciones de las fracciones con respecto al fósforo total: P-detrítico (47,02% - 56,95%) > P-orgánico > (38,87% - 50,74%) > (1,14% - 2,28%) >P-autigénico P-asociados a óxidos (0,25% - 0,62%). Las fuentes principales del fósforo detrítico y orgánico, están asociadas a la apatita litogénica terrestre proveniente de material erosionado de los cinturones orogénicos de las Cordilleras de los Andes, de la Costa, Escudo Guayanés y de los Llanos venezolanos y colombianos. La materia orgánica compuesta de árboles (C3) y gramíneas (C4) provenientes de las sabanas que es transportada por el río Orinoco hasta su Delta y de allí redistribuido hacia el Golfo de Paria. This document summarizes a study on carbon regeneration in the water column of the Cariaco Basin, Venezuela. The key findings are:

The total concentration and the chemical forms of heavy metals were determined in
superficial sediments of the Cuchivero river, Venezuela, using sequential extraction and
atomic absorption spectrophotometry with flame. Pollution indices were used to study the
distribution, pollution and environmental risk in the sediments. Total values ranged from,
394-457 mgkg-1 Fe, 46,87-74,82 Mn, 6,45-11,92 Zn, 1,70-5,75 Ni, 0,39-3,7 Cu, 1,25-3,63

strongly associated with the residual fraction minerals (70 to 90%), carbonates and iron

This research aims to evaluate some chemical parameters of surface sediments of coastal La Restinga lagoon, located in Margarita Island, Nueva Esparta state, Venezuela. Using classical methodology for geochemical, grain size and texture sediment percentage of organic carbon and total organic matter, and calcium carbonate was analyzed. Additionally, the concentrations of total nitrogen, total phosphorus and aliphatic hydrocarbons were determined. The results showed that in the lagoon La Restinga prevailing sedimentary sandy texture, above the sandy-loam and sandy-clay. The percentages of total organic carbon, total organic matter and calcium carbonate respectively varied as follows: 1.70-25.53%, 11.10-82.10% and 2.93-44.01%. Concentrations of 282.10-1571.80 mg kg-1 in total nitrogen, 419.50-2033.70 mg kg-1 in total phosphorus and 5.65-63.18 mg kg-1 for aliphatic hydrocarbons were determined. The total organic matter in the lagoon La Restinga is distributed based on the fine particles of sediment and the presence of mangroves, in turn calcium carbonate, was associated mainly to contributions from organisms with calcareous shell. The low values of the ratio NT/PT (under 5) suggest limiting the nitrogen in the ecosystem, and natural or anthropogenic enrichment of phosphorus in the sediment. The levels of certain aliphatic hydrocarbons, are not considered as contaminants levels as established by CARIPOL (1980), except in the eastern end of the main body of the lake. This paper reports the geochemical characteristics and environmental conditions of Cuchivero river sediments in Venezuela, depending on particle size, organic matter, organic carbon, nitrogen and total phosphorus, carbonates and heavy metals. The granulometry was typified by a predominance of sands with low organic matter (0.52 to 0.87%), organic carbon (0.06 to 0.09%) and carbonates content (0.54 to 2.61%) as well as high values of total nitrogen (602-985 mg / kg). The poor correlation between nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter, it suggests present of nitrogen and total phosphorus of allochthonous origin and no Redfield organic matter. The average heavy metals in mg/kg, showed a concentration gradient descent, Fe (410)> Mn (63.14)> Zn (9.01)> Ni (3.38)> (2.21Cu)> Cr (2.09)> Co (1.13)> Cd (0.21) > Pb (0.07) mg / kg, with an association to the sands and carbonates, suggesting lithogenic origin. The Manzanares River is one of the more important rivers of Venezuela inasmuch as it is used to supply drinking
water to a large part of the northeastern zone of Venezuela. For this reason a study was undertaken of the surface waters of the
estuarine zone of the river, following the saline gradient from zero to salinities greater than 30. The following properties were
measured: river volume flow, rainfall, pH, temperature, suspended materials, dissolved oxygen and ammonium, and heavy metals
(Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Pb and Cd) in particulate and dissolved phases. River volume flow varied with seasonal rainfall throughout
the year, as expected, while temperature varied between 24.5 and30.4 oC and pH ranged from 6.65 and 8.9. From the dry to the wet
season, suspended material increased from 23 to 880 mg/l at low salinity, and always decreased progressively as salinity increased.
Concentrations of total ammonium, 14.5 to 14.3 mmol/l, were high, while those of dissolved oxygen, 3.57 to 5.27 ml/l, were low, and
these levels were even more accentuated at salinities under 5 during the dry season. The highest concentrations found for heavy
metals were: Fe 406.02; Mn 5.57; Zn 2.18; Cu 0.72; Cr 0.19; Ni 0.72; Pb 0.12; Cd 0.03 mmol/l. These surpass Venezuelan legal limits
for water intended for human consumption as well as for waters to be discharged in coastal areas. Concentrations decreased at
increased salinity because of the dilution effect, flocculation and/or precipitation in the form of oxyhydroxides. The results obtained

The hydrographic conditions and sanitary quality of the waters of the coastal region of Playa Grande Bay
were studied during May 2003. We set up 21 stations to collect surface and bottom samples and three current meters – an
upward-mounted hydroacoustic profiler and two single-point Doppler current sensors that operated for 14 days. Samples were
collected in 5-L Niskin bottles equipped with a lid-closing device operated through a cable. The samples were studied according
to established methods for seawater analysis. The pH ranged between 7.93 and 8.31; the temperature, between 22.0 and 24.0
ºC; the salinity, between 36.56 and 37.17 units; the color, between 15 and 30 Pt-Co units. The biochemical oxygen demand
ranged between 4.05 and 68.96 mg/L; and total nitrogen, between 0.53 and 1.27 mg/L. Total phosphate fluctuated between
0.02 and 0.16 mg/L; lipids, between 0.08 and 0.39 mg/L; aliphatic hydrocarbons, between 0.01 and 0.12 mg/L. Detergents did
not exceed the value of 0.02 mg/L. In some cases, total and fecal coliforms reached values beyond the limit of 1000 NMP/
100ml for total coliforms set by the Ministry of the Environment for type 4 waters (partial and total human contact). The
quality of these waters shows the impact of effluents, running mostly from east to west, in the sector of Campo Ajuro. The
physical and chemical conditions of the waters of this bay may vary throughout the year as a consequence of the dynamic
conditions prevailing in the region. It is recommended that these studies be carried out at least twice a year: during the dry

The carbon regeneration in the water column of
the Cariaco Basin (Venezuela) was investigated
using a regression model of total alkalinity (TA)
and the concentration of total inorganic carbon
(TCO2
). Primary productivity (PP) was determined
from the inorganic carbon fraction assimilated
by phytoplankton and the variation of the 22 and
23°C isotherm was used as an indicator of coastal
upwelling. The results indicate that CO2
levels were
lowest (1962 µmol/kg) at the surface and increased
to 2451 µmol/kg below the oxic-anoxic redox
interface. The vertical regeneration distribution of
carbon was dominated (82%) by organic carbon
originating from the soft tissue of photosynthetic
organisms, whereas 18% originated from the
dissolution of biogenic calcite. The regeneration
of organic carbon was highest in the surface layer
in agreement with the primary productivity values.
However, at the oxic-anoxic interface a second more
intense maximum was detected (70-80%), generated
by chemotrophic respiration of organic material
by microorganisms. The percentages in the anoxic
layers were lower than in the oxic zone because
aerobic decomposition occurs more rapidly than
anaerobic respiration of organic material because
more labile fractions of organic carbon have already

En esta investigación se determinaron las fracciones P-adsorbida o lábil (F1), P-autigénica (F2), P-asociada a óxidos (F3), P-detrítica (F4) y P-orgánica (F5), y la biodisponibilidad del fósforo en los sedimentos del Golfo de Paria, Venezuela. La concentración de fósforo total (PT) osciló entre 3,93-4,97 μmol P/g, y se encuentra principalmente en forma detrítica y orgánica. Se evidencian diferentes mecanismos de transporte y mecanismos posdepositacionales de partículas de composición química variable, que inducen a un gradiente decreciente en las concentraciones de las fracciones con respecto al fósforo total: P-detrítico (47,02% - 56,95%) > P-orgánico > (38,87% - 50,74%) > (1,14% - 2,28%) >P-autigénico P-asociados a óxidos (0,25% - 0,62%). Las fuentes principales del fósforo detrítico y orgánico, están asociadas a la apatita litogénica terrestre proveniente de material erosionado de los cinturones orogénicos de las Cordilleras de los Andes, de la Costa, Escudo Guayanés y de los Llanos venezolanos y colombianos. La materia orgánica compuesta de árboles (C3) y gramíneas (C4) provenientes de las sabanas que es transportada por el río Orinoco hasta su Delta y de allí redistribuido hacia el Golfo de Paria. This document summarizes a study on carbon regeneration in the water column of the Cariaco Basin, Venezuela. The key findings are:
1) Carbon dioxide levels were lowest at the surface (1962 μmol/kg) and increased below the oxic-anoxic redox interface to 2451 μmol/kg.
2) Vertical carbon regeneration was dominated by organic carbon from photosynthetic organisms (82%), with the remaining 18% from biogenic calcite dissolution.

The total concentration and the chemical forms of heavy metals were determined in
superficial sediments of the Cuchivero river, Venezuela, using sequential extraction and
atomic absorption spectrophotometry with flame. Pollution indices were used to study the
distribution, pollution and environmental risk in the sediments. Total values ranged from,
394-457 mgkg-1 Fe, 46,87-74,82 Mn, 6,45-11,92 Zn, 1,70-5,75 Ni, 0,39-3,7 Cu, 1,25-3,63
Cr, 0,37-1,82 Co, 0,10-0,30 Cd y <Ld-0,20 mgkg-1 Pb. The metals were found to be
strongly associated with the residual fraction minerals (70 to 90%), carbonates and iron
oxihidroxides. Manganese and cadmium were associated mostly exchangeable fraction
(60-70%). The indices indicate that the source of metals is mainly bedrock; no metal
enrichment and contamination exist. The risk of environmental disruption is low for Fe

This research aims to evaluate some chemical parameters of surface sediments of coastal La Restinga lagoon, located in Margarita Island, Nueva Esparta state, Venezuela. Using classical methodology for geochemical, grain size and texture sediment percentage of organic carbon and total organic matter, and calcium carbonate was analyzed. Additionally, the concentrations of total nitrogen, total phosphorus and aliphatic hydrocarbons were determined. The results showed that in the lagoon La Restinga prevailing sedimentary sandy texture, above the sandy-loam and sandy-clay. The percentages of total organic carbon, total organic matter and calcium carbonate respectively varied as follows: 1.70-25.53%, 11.10-82.10% and 2.93-44.01%. Concentrations of 282.10-1571.80 mg kg-1 in total nitrogen, 419.50-2033.70 mg kg-1 in total phosphorus and 5.65-63.18 mg kg-1 for aliphatic hydrocarbons were determined. The total organic matter in the lagoon La Restinga is distributed based on the fine particles of sediment and the presence of mangroves, in turn calcium carbonate, was associated mainly to contributions from organisms with calcareous shell. The low values of the ratio NT/PT (under 5) suggest limiting the nitrogen in the ecosystem, and natural or anthropogenic enrichment of phosphorus in the sediment. The levels of certain aliphatic hydrocarbons, are not considered as contaminants levels as established by CARIPOL (1980), except in the eastern end of the main body of the lake. This paper reports the geochemical characteristics and environmental conditions of Cuchivero river sediments in Venezuela, depending on particle size, organic matter, organic carbon, nitrogen and total phosphorus, carbonates and heavy metals. The granulometry was typified by a predominance of sands with low organic matter (0.52 to 0.87%), organic carbon (0.06 to 0.09%) and carbonates content (0.54 to 2.61%) as well as high values of total nitrogen (602-985 mg / kg). The poor correlation between nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter, it suggests present of nitrogen and total phosphorus of allochthonous origin and no Redfield organic matter. The average heavy metals in mg/kg, showed a concentration gradient descent, Fe (410)> Mn (63.14)> Zn (9.01)> Ni (3.38)> (2.21Cu)> Cr (2.09)> Co (1.13)> Cd (0.21) > Pb (0.07) mg / kg, with an association to the sands and carbonates, suggesting lithogenic origin. The Manzanares River is one of the more important rivers of Venezuela inasmuch as it is used to supply drinking
water to a large part of the northeastern zone of Venezuela. For this reason a study was undertaken of the surface waters of the
estuarine zone of the river, following the saline gradient from zero to salinities greater than 30. The following properties were
measured: river volume flow, rainfall, pH, temperature, suspended materials, dissolved oxygen and ammonium, and heavy metals
(Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Pb and Cd) in particulate and dissolved phases. River volume flow varied with seasonal rainfall throughout
the year, as expected, while temperature varied between 24.5 and30.4 oC and pH ranged from 6.65 and 8.9. From the dry to the wet
season, suspended material increased from 23 to 880 mg/l at low salinity, and always decreased progressively as salinity increased.
Concentrations of total ammonium, 14.5 to 14.3 mmol/l, were high, while those of dissolved oxygen, 3.57 to 5.27 ml/l, were low, and
these levels were even more accentuated at salinities under 5 during the dry season. The highest concentrations found for heavy
metals were: Fe 406.02; Mn 5.57; Zn 2.18; Cu 0.72; Cr 0.19; Ni 0.72; Pb 0.12; Cd 0.03 mmol/l. These surpass Venezuelan legal limits
for water intended for human consumption as well as for waters to be discharged in coastal areas. Concentrations decreased at
increased salinity because of the dilution effect, flocculation and/or precipitation in the form of oxyhydroxides. The results obtained

The hydrographic conditions and sanitary quality of the waters of the coastal region of Playa Grande Bay
were studied during May 2003. We set up 21 stations to collect surface and bottom samples and three current meters – an
upward-mounted hydroacoustic profiler and two single-point Doppler current sensors that operated for 14 days. Samples were
collected in 5-L Niskin bottles equipped with a lid-closing device operated through a cable. The samples were studied according
to established methods for seawater analysis. The pH ranged between 7.93 and 8.31; the temperature, between 22.0 and 24.0
ºC; the salinity, between 36.56 and 37.17 units; the color, between 15 and 30 Pt-Co units. The biochemical oxygen demand
ranged between 4.05 and 68.96 mg/L; and total nitrogen, between 0.53 and 1.27 mg/L. Total phosphate fluctuated between
0.02 and 0.16 mg/L; lipids, between 0.08 and 0.39 mg/L; aliphatic hydrocarbons, between 0.01 and 0.12 mg/L. Detergents did
not exceed the value of 0.02 mg/L. In some cases, total and fecal coliforms reached values beyond the limit of 1000 NMP/
100ml for total coliforms set by the Ministry of the Environment for type 4 waters (partial and total human contact). The
quality of these waters shows the impact of effluents, running mostly from east to west, in the sector of Campo Ajuro. The
physical and chemical conditions of the waters of this bay may vary throughout the year as a consequence of the dynamic
conditions prevailing in the region. It is recommended that these studies be carried out at least twice a year: during the dry

The popularity of functional foods among scientists and common people has been increasing day by day. Awareness and modernization make the consumer think better regarding food and nutrition. Now a day’s individual knows very well about the relation between food consumption and disease prevalence. Humans have a diversity of microbes in the gut that together form the gut microflora. Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Multiple efforts have been done in the past and ongoing in present for these beneficial microbial population stability until their destination in the gut. One of a useful technique known as microencapsulation makes the probiotic effective in the diversified conditions and maintain these microbe’s community to the optimum level for achieving targeted benefits. Dairy products are found to be an ideal vehicle for probiotic incorporation. It has been seen that the encapsulated microbial cells show higher viability than the free cells in different processing and storage conditions as well as against bile salts in the gut. They make the food functional when incorporated, without affecting the product sensory characteristics.

Optimizing Post Remediation Groundwater Performance with Enhanced Microbiolog...
Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.

The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.

Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.
