4. Evil
• Evil was always around.
• It’s part of Creation.
• But not always manifest
on the surface,
• And by the same token,
will not always remain
hidden underneath…

5. On the Surface
• “On the surface” = what we see.
• In the world – what we hear in the news.
• In ourselves – what we think, talk, and do.
• Can be measured.
• Can be dealt with.
• That’s what we need to work on.

6. Under the Surface
• The sub-conscious.
• Example: What alarms you when someone is
staring at you from behind.
• And similarly in the world at large – the real
moving force behind world events.
• There’s powerful stuff under the surface.
• The bad powers of which are called “Deep Evil”.
• No control over these powers.
• Too hard to fix.

7. Surging of New Evils
• But life is dynamic.
• The stuff from the sub-conscious makes its way to the
consciousness of the person, and the world, over time.
• These are the new evils we see pop up throughout
history,
• Typically dressed as the “modern culture” of the time.
• For example:
– Idol worshipping (Up to destruction of First Temple)
– Hellenism (During Second Temple, circa 200 BCE)
– Enlightenment (1800s CE)

8. Why Evils Surface
• The world needs to be cleaned up in preparation
for the End Times.
• That includes underneath the surface as well.
• How do we get down there? We don’t:
• As each type/level of evil is dealt with on the
surface, a deeper level/layer gets exposed –
– that will be the next challenge.
• We only clean the surface – the “dirt” that we
find there at the time.

9. Example:
Friendship Becoming Shaky
• Two good friends whom you’d think it’s
impossible to separate – start fighting!
• Why?
• A deeper, new evil popped up in their hearts,
• Trying to divide & conquer.
• It’s for the purpose of overcoming and putting it
to bed.
• The friendship will thus become even healthier.

10. It’s (only) Looking Bad
• Like someone who’s cleaning up his garage
• Throwing all the stuff he doesn’t want outside
• Starting to look very messy on the front lawn…
• … until the garbage truck comes.
• It’s good that all the rubbish is piled up outside.
That’s how it’ll be easily collected and removed.
• Before, all the rubbish was inside, hidden, mixed
up with other precious items.
• So looks can be deceiving.

11. “A boorish man does not know, neither does a
fool understand this. When the wicked flourish
like grass, and all workers of violence blossom –
only to be destroyed to eternity.”
Psalms 90:7-8
…surfacing to disappear.

12. The Deeper – the Stronger
• You work hard.
• You move up in life.
• There’s always a bigger challenge to take on.
• Same thing with cleaning up the world:
• As we progress in time and achieve new
milestones, the evils that come our way get
more intense.

13. The Surging of Evil

1st Temple

SHALLOW
• Cause of destruction: Idol worship, Illicit relations, murder.
• Shocking!
• But definitive physical acts – discernible.
• For example, murdering for power / wealth. No deep hatred.
• Easy fix (It took 70 years)

• Cause of destruction: Unwarranted hatred. Just a feeling inside
(albeit ill). What’s so wrong?
• This question is the very problem:
• Discounting the fellow = subtle murder!
• Latent/indiscernible evils.
• Hard to fix (look, we’re still talking about it…!)
• Anti-Semitism is the more global expression of this theme

• The worst. Extreme. Irrational. Ridiculous
• More of the “unwarranted” bit of the hatred
• Even families break down. Even scholars decay. Even Synagogues
are defiled (by Jews themselves).
• Suicide bombing, Israeli government giving away territory to
terrorists, and releasing them from jail are some worldly
expressions of this theme.
Evil at its

14. • With advent of Moshiach, we have to deal
with the worst evils.
• These are the very “Bad Signs” of Moshiach
we find in the Prophets and Talmud.
• (To be analysed subsequent to these slides)
• But once these worst evils are dealt with,
there’s no more evil to fight.
• Evil meets its end.

15. • The evils that we can see are what we can
(and must) deal with and remove.
• Deeper evils will surface when it’s time to deal
with them.
• Looks bad on the surface while evil is being
dealt with, but underneath it’s getting better.
• Evil is worst just before Coming of Moshiach.
• Once worst evils cleaned up – Evil forever
gone.

How to deal with these surging Evils?

17. The Cure: Torah
• Being eternal, it contains instructions for all
times.
• Not all instructions are publicly known (“on the
surface”) at all times.
• But neither do they remain hidden (“under the
surface”) forever…
• The Torah explains what
G-d wants.
• And what He doesn’t
want (= Evil).
• And how to deal with it.

18. On the Surface
• The surface of the Torah is its Revealed Plane
(‫נגלה‬/Nigleh)
• The simple/ literal meaning.
• The Law – identifying what’s right and what’s
wrong.
• You can put your finger on it. Take it to court.
Codify it.
• It enables fighting the visible Evils and
eradicating them.

19. Under the Surface
• Below the surface of the Torah is its Hidden
Plane (‫נסתר‬/Nistar).
• Torah that was given in a hidden manner (not
taught openly).
• Torah that deals with hidden matters.
• What’s going on inside the person, and up in
the higher worlds.
• To enable fighting with one’s own evil
inclinations (hidden evils).

20. Surging of Deeper Torah
• As time goes on, more of the Hidden Torah is
revealed.
• In two ways:
1. Within the person – can learn and relate to
the new levels.
2. Out in the world – widely publicised.
• The Torah of Moshiach will
1. Reveal the ultimate depths that humans can
handle.
2. Impact the world far and wide.

Loving Your Fellow Like Yourself
• Nigleh: Love his qualities:
– Everyone has qualities.
– Just need to discover (reveal) them.
– Just like you’re well aware of your own qualities…
• Nistar: Love his soul:
– All souls are brothers, children of their one Father in Heaven.
– Part of the same organism (“yourself”) and complement each
other.
– Regardless of any qualities.
• Etzem: Love G-d:
– Each soul has a G-dly element. Its origin. Its essence.
– That’s the exact same element in every soul.
– Loving that in your fellow is actually loving yourself.

23. Why Torah Deepens
1. Simply: The cure before the blow. Remedy the deeper
evils.
2. In fact: To wash corresponding levels of evil to the
surface for cleansing.
3. But really: To introduce the Torah that’ll be studied in
the Times of Moshiach,
– Which isn’t about fighting with Evil.
– Exposes Evil’s true reality – it’s nothing!
– There is only G-d.
On this level it makes no sense to go out and fight…

24. Summary so far (Torah)
• The deeper the Evil, the deeper the Torah:
 Shallow Evils remedied by the Revealed Plane.
 Deeper Evils remedied by the Hidden Plane.
 Deepest Evils remedied by the Torah of Moshiach.
• Just before Moshiach is the hardest battle but just after
is the biggest peace.
• Can understand why Moshiach is such a wow:
 Fighting the hardest battle against Evil.
 With the most advanced weapons (Torah)
 Concludes the history-long struggles with all sorts of
Evil.
 Forever.

25. Pre-Moshiach Climax
• Not everyone can handle the extreme.
• What’s more – two opposite extremes:
• The deepest evils Vs. deepest Torah.
• What a fight!
• Well…
• Here’s another extreme into the pre-Moshiach

• Human ability has been generally
shrinking with time.
• So at the end we’re rock bottom.
• Is that really so?

each of the human faculties
(Intellect, Emotion, Action) –
• It slides down across them –
• “The Falling Suka of David”:
• Earlier generations had large
intellectual capacity – their main
occupation was Torah Learning.
• Later generations are bigger in the
realm of Action.
• Not because we’re physically
stronger.
• Rather because we have more
means at our disposal:
• Funds and technology.
• Doing Charity and Good Deeds like
no earlier generation has ever
known.

• That’s when the generation is also like a heel in comparison

• Fraught with insensitivity.
• Look – The footsteps of Moshiach and the associated climax
are in full swing, but alas, they go straight over our heads!
• However there’s also a plus to being spiritually insensitive:
• Can handle the roughness of Deep Evil.
• Just doing the right thing with earnestness.
• Any other generation would appreciate how ugly and
dangerous Deep Evil is, and would go crazy.

• Philosophy can make important new grounds –

• Depth of mind was reserved to the philosophers
of old.
• The ingenuity we have today is in how to apply
past achievements, not dreaming new ideas from
scratch.
• Action, not theory. Application, not reinvention.

In Pre-Moshiach Times, personal ability is at record low
because:
1. Otherwise we’d go crazy (from the Pre-Moshiach
Climax).
2. That’s how we can handle the Deep Evils that
surface then.
3. It’s really not about our own capacity,
But about the Torah we acquire.
The deeper the Torah – the larger our ability to
reach the greatest heights – those destined for the
Messianic Era.

• The verse is dealing with (“they”) Deep Evils...
• “Many” – world scale, not just local instances.
• Everyone can see – “clarified”, or even more so – “whitened”
• But to “understand”, got to be “wise”.
• Why is it happening? The deep evils that have been hidden thus far
are rising to the surface – to get cleaned up (“purify”).
