Dear RedEye mini customer,
Thank you for supporting us by being one of the first to purchase the
new RedEye mini. As such, it is with deep regret that we write to
inform you that we will be recalling the entire first lot of RedEye
mini units - all those with serial numbers beginning with C0101.
Although many of you may not have experienced problems thus far, we
plan to replace all RedEye mini units with new hardware at no cost to
you. Customers who do not wish to receive a replacement unit may
instead choose to receive a refund of their full purchase price. There
is no need for you to return your RedEye mini to us - if it is working
for you, please continue to keep and to use it.
RedEye mini launched on Tuesday, 20 July to much fanfare, and we were
both excited and overwhelmed by customer response. As customers have
begun receiving and using their new RedEye minis over the past couple
of days, however, we have become increasingly alarmed at the number of
units that have been broken upon arrival, or which have failed after
working successfully - sometimes after just a few minutes or hours. We
have been testing 100% of all units in the factory, and so expected
few if any defects.
As we have investigated this issue further, we discovered that our
manufacturer has been using an inadequate foam tape to secure the
RedEye mini's printed circuit board to the inside of the plastic
housing. Whereas we had specified the use of a permanent adhesive,
this tape does not meet our specification and we are seeing boards
coming free and vibrating around inside their enclosures. This usually
leads to broken wiring or short circuits - ultimately a defunct or
severely malfunctioning unit. Because of this poor quality of this
tape, we believe that many RedEye mini units which are now working
properly will break as the printed circuit board separates from the
plastic housing and the wires connecting the board to the headphone
jack break from vibrations incurred during normal use.
Replacement units will be available in 3-4 weeks, as we are currently
transitioning to a new manufacturer and reverting to our original and
desired design for the RedEye mini, which is to solder the printed
circuit board directly to the headphone jack. If you are interested,
you can read more about the technical details on our support site:
http://cts.vresp.com/c/?ThinkFloodInc./cef7b3ba72/342c307d51/c867d7b729/utm_campaign=RedEye%20mini%20recall&utm_content={URIENCODE%5Bemail_address%5D}&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=VerticalResponse&utm_term=Text%20Version%20-%20Link%201
Again, we apologize for the inconvenience and delay in getting quality
units in your hands. We know that many of you waited weeks for the
mini release, and we know that you have been or may soon be
disappointed to find your hardware non-functional. We are working hard
to make things right, and hope that you will give us a chance to win
back your confidence.
If we do not hear from you, we will automatically send a replacement
unit at no cost once new units are available. If you wish to receive a
refund, please reply to this email and let us know.
Warmest regards,
ThinkFlood management
