Editor's Notes

  • #2 Give my Background so some people can relate. Growing up around world Oxford and University Internships China Japan, study Japanese find job Intro: This talk is about how to get a job in Japan these options are based on my experiences, research and people who I've met there are a lot of people getting in via illegal ways, but if want to work there enough it's possible
  • #3 Quick overview of visas most of them won't apply to anyone as everyone's a student and not with many years of professional experience in an area Ability to get one of these visas also depends on the country you’re from
  • #4 Not going to go into this too much, but should mention that it is the easiest way to find work in Japan. Best paid at the beginning of career.
  • #5 inside (not recommended) mention people getting the year long working visa mention getting the holiday visa looking on gaijinpot.com go to a language school (expensive) look for a job in the meanwhile. This is what I did old fashioned method, just find a contact and get job via that, they will be for medium sized businesses can do this on a study abroad if the timing is right hello work centre in Osaka and Tokyo, has job adverts in a book. they can also advise you on what to do usually also possible to move there, find a job in teaching and use that as a base to find other jobs, but this can take years outside find a job from outside japan first, i.e. before you graduate and they provide visa and help moving usually e.g. MTG paid for my flight, gave me help finding a place, sorted out my VISA etc. going to the country first is expensive
  • #6 visas that you will most likely use, If you are to work in Japan right from the start will focus on these this lecture Engineer Specialist in humanities/international services Intra-company transferee
  • #8 Differences in the East and west Timetables (this is the new timetable for 2015, has slightly changed) Everything/company in Japan is synced west has milk round but still more leeway. even to apply to companies off the cuff, via just sending in resume Internships only a week long, don't lead onto a job stages of processes are very similar, first round interviews, numerical tests some companies trying to adapt for students with foreign experience so have more than one opening you also have second try interviews for people who didn't get jobs first time round for whatever reason Entry forms are all hand written, but Japanese companies are changing now to online versions. Also people are trying to get into the biggest companies, similar to UK. But less thought of trying to get into interesting company. As this company will be your life, and where you build career for the rest of your life.
  • #9 Every company has one everyone turns up in suits, just like every other part of recruitment, they even have manuals for what kind of suit and how to wear it done in Japanese, we will give a taster of what it one is like and give a quick presentation at the end. in the west these are far more about networking and getting contacts for interviews, in japan, they will take a register and that's about it. many places you can not apply unless you came to a 説明会
  • #10 Disco Boston London all over the world both inside and out of Japan, all events have slightly different companies other fairs across the world Experience Japan TOP Career other careers forums If they do a study abroad, go to international job fairs, they have a lot in Japan tips for the fairs apply beforehand, even if don't get response, go up to them on the day apply to many different places and plan really well at least that's my advice) need Japanese Resume, learn Japanese format need passport photo attached turn up respectably (no died hair and pink shirts) Can also try Domestic recruitment sites like MYNAVI, but I would recommend you concentrate on promoting yourself with you English ability.
  • #11 Companies they should consider Even if local and apply to a big company, high likeliness won’t even use English in anyway for a long time. Companies below are more international, and take advantage of bilingual abilities from start Investment banks otherwise, foreign companies won't accept them unless fluent or even native, this includes management consultants etc. difference in markets and uses of students in large and small companies recommended companies if their Japanese is less good programming companies, programmers, startups works applications gree DMR International companies, engineering rakuten mitsubishi fuso 日揮 Denso Aeon Startups
  • #12 Work environment depending on the type of job, company, There are many books written on this, so would be hard to complete this in such a short period of time But a lot of these things am going to mention are changing as the economy and country need to develop and change with the world advantages training to become future leader so training is broad and long Business manner training: tea ceremony, 名刺交換, picking up phone kouhei and my boss when kouhei helped me, indirect anger, staff are seen as to work for same company their whole lives, so trained that way taken into company, looked after until death never fire people strong ethics (Yonezawa getting fired by panasonic but still not backing down on them) strong feeling of team. and oppositely the nail that sticks up gets hammered down. not encouraged to show individualism. Team work for decisions disadvantages overtime due to: attention to detail in society and there customers desire it everyone works together as a team so try hard for a other people There is the thought that hardship is overcome, by perseverance and hardwork, but this sometimes turns into people staying in office for facetime Providing lots of information and updates People who get frustrated in Japan racism Depending on whether you are mainland chinese, abc, bbc, korean, white, black clear hierarchy, can be strict (上下関係) career progression is mapped out and can be slow directness/indirectness formality inside and outside office, opposite to the west a lot of deals are done after the meeting outside the office: Drinking There is going to be quite a large shock for both nationals returning and foreigners. style of working is very different, need to keep open minded, and understand that you're coming into someone else's house and following by their rules. Lastly, working in Japan advantages Japan's an incredible place to live working in a Japanese company, you will gain so much more valuable knowledge about the business style than others just working in expat firms important to work from a young age, so they you have less of a glass ceiling, and foundations and trust, and business Japanese will get much better, can always switch to a western firm later
  • #13 End on Happy note, if work in Japan, is the most incredible experience
