3. INTRODUCTION
The Database Development Life Cycle (DDLC) is a structured approach to
designing, building, and maintaining a database system. It encompasses various
stages from the initial concept to the ongoing maintenance of the database. The
primary goal of the DDLC is to ensure that the database meets the organization's
requirements, is efficient, scalable, and reliable. Here is an introduction to the key
phases of the Database Development Life Cycle:
7. Evaluation and selection
Evaluate the diverse DBMS
Identify or Selection Best Performing/ an appropriate Database
Some DBMS examples include MySQL, Microsoft Access, SQL Server,
Oracle.
9. Physical database design
Characterizes Data Storage and Data Access
To describe how we intend to physically implement the logical database design.
10. Implementation
Formation of Special Storage related Constructs
Physical realization of the database and application designs.
– Use DDL to create database schemas and empty database files.
– Use DDL to create any specified user views.
14. Maintenance
Process of monitoring and maintaining database system following installation.
Database Backup and Recovery
Access Management
Hardware Maintenance etc.
Maintaining and upgrading database system (when required).
15. CHALLENGES :
The database development life cycle has several challenges including:
Challenges
Data
governance
Access to
data
storage
Data
administration
security
Analysis
Data quality
issue
16. TECHNOLOGY :
The future of the Database Development Life Cycle (DDLC) promises
significant evolution, driven by advancing technologies and changing
industry demands.
The future of database technology may include:
● Scalability, Performance, Insights, Distributed databases, Cloud-based
solutions, Artificial intelligence, Machine learning.
17. FUTURE SCOPE
Future developments for databases:
• Cloud migration
• More creative ways to store data
• Data signatures and data pedigrees becoming more important
• More user-generated content
• More reliable image of the real world
18. CONCLUSION
We have seen the different phases of the software development life cycle and the
database development life cycle. Database development lifecycle (DDLC) is a subset
of the SDLC or we can say that the DDLC is part of the SDLC. The different phases
of DDLC are requirements analysis, database design, DBMS evaluation, selection,
implementation, data loading, testing, operation, performance tuning, and
maintenance. We saw the different activities performed in each phase and the output
generated in each phase.
