Similarly, a scanner is also an input device that is connected to a computer. It does the job of
copying an image and transferring it into the computer. This then can be seen as a soft copy
whenever needed.
A Mouse is a most popular input device used in computer technology. It consists of a small
palm-sized box and has a round ball inside it which senses all the movement of the mouse. Once
it does the sensing, it sends the signals to a computer for processing. A mouse has two buttons.
One is called the left and the other the right button. There is a scroll bar is the middle which is
used to scroll up and down. A mouse cannot be used to enter any text into the computer.
Then there is Light pen. This is a pointing device, which is like a pen. It is used to draw pictures
on the computer screen. When the pen is moved over the screen and the button I is pressed, the
sensing elements detect the location of the screen. Then the image is transferred to the Central
processing Unit.
The other input device is a Trackball. It is commonly used in notebooks or laptop computers.
This is a form of improved technology and gained speed when laptops were introduced in the
market. It is used in place of a mouse. The ball is half inserted into the computer and by
scrolling on the ball, the pointer on the screen can be moved. The track ball does not occupy
much space on a laptop. It comes in various shapes too.
A Microphone is used to input sound. The sound is stored in digital form inside the computer.
One can also use it for live communication on the Internet. All the input devices are basically
used to impart some kind of data into the computer. Therefore, these are called Data input
devices.
