This document summarizes the thermal characterization of a gas-gap heat switch developed by the University of Twente in collaboration with ESA. The heat switch uses a gas whose thermal conductivity varies with temperature and pressure to act as a thermal conductor or insulator. The author built thermal models and conducted experiments to evaluate the heat switch performance. The experimental results showed good agreement with the models. The heat switch exhibited an ON conductance of 2.60 W/K and OFF conductance of 0.30 W/K with an ON/OFF ratio of 8.67 when operating with helium gas. Improvements to the manufacturing process were also recommended to enhance performance and tolerances.
The document discusses past work analyzing stresses in turbine rotors using finite element methods. Several studies are reviewed that used FEM to analyze thermal and mechanical stresses. Transient thermal analysis was found to produce higher stresses than steady state analysis. Maximum stresses occurred in areas with large temperature gradients like the first stage of intermediate pressure casings. Studies analyzed stress variations over time and with changes in governing modes. FEM provided accurate stress results and the ability to optimize turbine design and operation for maximum efficiency and safety. Future work should further explore transient thermal stress analysis using FEM to better understand failure mechanisms.

The document discusses heat gain through building structures via conduction. It describes how heat is transferred through exterior walls, roofs, windows, and doors due to temperature differences. It explains that the solar radiation absorbed by outside surfaces of walls and roofs increases their temperature above the outside air temperature, which is known as the solar air temperature. The heat gain through walls and roofs can be calculated using the CLTD method, which factors in the surface area, overall U-value, and CLTD value from tables based on location and time of day. Infiltration through doors and windows also contributes to heat gain as outside air flows into the building.

This document discusses numerical simulation of a thermoacoustic engine (TAE). It begins by providing background on TAEs and previous simulation work. It then describes the methodology used, which involves CFD simulation of a standing wave TAE with a stack of horizontal plates as the regenerator. The study assesses pressure wave development and analyzes the sensitivity to temperature gradient at the stack and resonator length. Preliminary results show higher temperature gradients produce higher pressure amplitudes and earlier wave development, while medium resonator lengths provide both high amplitude and faster initiation compared to very short or long lengths.

This document summarizes the design and analysis of an exhaust manifold expansion joint for a WDP4D diesel locomotive. The existing expansion joint design cracks due to high thermal stresses from exhaust gas temperatures over 600°C. A finite element analysis is performed to investigate fatigue phenomena. The analysis identifies high stresses in gaps in the existing design that reduce heat convection. The design is modified by increasing the bellow width and curvature area to improve heat transfer and reduce stresses. Thermal analysis of the modified design shows von Mises stresses under 150MPa, lower than the material yield strength, indicating the design is safe and cracks will not occur.
IRJET- Review on An Innovative Approach to Study the Thermal Performance of M...IRJET Journal
This document reviews thermal performance analysis of a muffler heat shield for the Hero Xtreme 200R motorcycle. It discusses how heat shields protect components from high exhaust temperatures through conduction, convection, and radiation. The authors conducted computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis using ANSYS to optimize the design of the muffler heat shield. Their results showed the optimized design could reduce pressure drop in the exhaust system by up to 13% through minor design changes to the perforated pipe. The document also provides background on heat shield applications in automotive exhaust systems and prior studies analyzing thermal behavior and heat transfer in exhaust components.

REVIEW ARTICLE: MODELLING AND ANALYSIS OF A GASOLINE ENGINE EXHAUST GAS SYSTEMSBarhm Mohamad
This document summarizes research on modeling and analyzing gasoline engine exhaust systems. It discusses:
- CFD simulations that show exhaust manifold pressure, temperature, and velocity vary with engine speed. Pressure and temperature generally decrease along the exhaust pipe while velocity remains similar for different fuels.
- Experiments and CFD analyses that compare exhaust pipe temperatures and show SST turbulence models can accurately predict flow separation. Pressure, temperature, and velocity in the cylinder and exhaust manifold vary with crank angle.
- Literature reviews of exhaust system geometries. Non-circular exhaust pipe cross-sections can increase gas flow rates compared to circular pipes by up to 25%. Optimal designs must consider turbulent gas flow characteristics.
This document summarizes a research paper that analyzed heat transfer in an economizer using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). It discussed how fins can be added to economizer tubes to increase the heat transfer surface area between flue gases and boiler feedwater. The document reviewed previous research on economizer design optimization and failures. It described the working of CFD analysis using equations of continuity, momentum, and energy to model fluid flow. The study used the k-ε turbulence model in CFD software to analyze heat transfer with and without fins on an economizer.
CFD ANALYSIS OF ECONOMIZER TO OPTIMIZE HEAT TRANSFER IAEME Publication
Economizer is the best mechanical component which is used for trapping the heat of flue gasses. Economizers can be best applied in electricity generating power plants. Best way of
utilisation of flue gas heat is by transferring it to the boiler feed water. Hence economizers are designed in such a way that feed water is allowed to pass the economizer through pipes. Economizer shell is completely filled with the flue gasses. There is a cross flow heat exchange process takes place between boiler feed water and flue gas.
A general interest to reduce fossil fuel consumption and to limit combustion
emissions, increase the efficiency of combustion chambers. One of the most important
processes in a gas turbine combustor, influencing to a large extent the efficiency of the
entire combustion process is the mixing between a swirling annular jet (primary air) and
the non-swirling inner jet (fuel). In normal swirling combustor, primary swirling air is
only supplied to the chamber and is mixed with the fuel but we here introduce a small
duct in the chamber containing a small amount of air without swirl and make it to mix
with the fuel and the primary swirling air. We have modified the design of the swirl
combustor by introducing a bluff body over the flow of the turbulent jet through which the
turbulent air will pass causing the axial velocity. For the purpose of simulation of the
required model of swirl combustor we are using the recent tools like ANSYS, ICEM, CFD
and FLUENT software’s. Using these tools the numerical investigation has been done.
The various values that are obtained are compared with the previous results of the swirl
combustor and the increase in the efficiency of the combustion has been noted
This thesis explores optimising the design of small-scale standing wave thermoacoustic coolers and engines using a multi-objective approach. Mathematical models are developed to optimise geometric stack parameters for maximum performance. The optimisation problems are formulated as mixed-integer nonlinear programs with multiple objectives. A lexicographic method is used to compute the entire Pareto front and identify optimal solutions. Experimental results on 36 stacks show trends in agreement with models. The approach provides fast estimates of optimal stack geometry and position for small-scale thermoacoustic devices.
IRJET- A Research on Vibration Analysis & Optimization of Housing for ECU in ...IRJET Journal
This document discusses a research project that aims to analyze and optimize the housing for an electronic control unit (ECU) in an automobile using finite element analysis (FEA) and an FFT analyzer. The researchers first design an ECU housing model using CAD software. They then perform modal and harmonic analysis using FEA to investigate the housing's mode shapes and response at different frequencies. Experimental modal analysis is also conducted using an accelerometer, impact hammer, and FFT analyzer. The FEA results are compared to the experimental results. The objective is to minimize vertical vibrations in the ECU housing by adding stiffening ribs and optimizing the design to withstand vibrations from the engine.
