Darfur By: Emily Verica
Why I Chose This Topic It’s a well known, yet mysterious, case of genocide. I’m fascinated by what drives people to deadly extents. I’m interested in how the people who were directly effected with the genocide dealt with it.
What I Already Know About My Topic I know that there are a lot of problems going on. I know that it is one of the worse cases of genocide the world has ever seen. I know it’s been going on since 2003.
What is going on in Darfur? Many people call the violence and war in Darfur genocide. Genocide is a mass murdering of many, many people. In simple terms Darfur is a giant war between two parties.
What is the Cause of the War? Two rebel groups- the Sudan Liberation Army (SLM) and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) The rebels revolted against the Sudanese government Government took charge violently which started the war
Why Did the Rebels Revolt? SLM and JEM revolted because the government wouldn’t protect them from nomadic tribes.
Janjaweed Who are they? They’re a government supported group Main purpose is to destroy all the nomadic tribes in Africa AND kill all rebels and those associated with them
What is Happening to the People 2 million families have been displaced 400,000 and counting have died In 2003 5 people were killed or died of starvation per day And people are still suffering from:
Attacks From The Janjaweed
Drought
And Starvation
What Surprised Me I was surprised most by the fact that THIS ATROCITY IS STILL GOING ON!!!
Questions I Still Have Why wouldn’t the rest of the world put a reasonable amount of effort in to end this problem much sooner? How has the Sudanese government been getting away with everything? Why is this STILL going on?
