In the Lucas driving seat
I joined Lucas at the age of 15 and have never looked back. Through the
1980s I worked at all levels on site starting initially as a labourer,
becoming a trainee operative and gaining a City & Guilds qualification in
my chosen trade of Painting & Decorating. My strong desire to succeed
saw me become a site foreman and then onto the role of contracts
manager which was a turning point in my career.
My experience managing large projects paved my way to becoming a director and shareholder
of Lucas in 1990. With the solid team I had built around me, the company began attracting
major clients and securing projects such as MI5's HQ in London and the new Glaxo Campus
in Stevenage (badged at the time to be the world's largest construction project and officially
opened by her majesty The Queen).
In 1993, fuelled by my passion to deliver excellent customer service, Lucas achieved ISO
9001 certification, one of the first UK contractors in its field to do so.
1997 saw Lucas secure contracts to deliver London's new Jubilee Line extension and
Bluewater Shopping Centre and I was also appointed Managing Director.
The following year Lucas won London's new Excel Centre and the Millennium Dome. (We
were later part of the Millennium Dome becoming the O2.)
Having built a solid business by the mid 2000s, Lucas secured a £10m contract with BAA to
paint the new Terminal 5 Heathrow building.
In 2007 we expanded the Lucas service to include fit out and finishing.
In 2010 I became the Executive Chairman of the company following a successful management
buy out. A year later we delivered the new road car production facility for McLaren who then
appointed Lucas as Official Partners, which as a car and motor racing enthusiast, is one of my
proudest achievements yet.
By the end of 2012, Lucas had delivered works on the new Olympic Stadium and other major
venues ready for the London 2012 Games, as well as completing work on The Shard.
Today, I provide strategic leadership and an active management role ensuring Lucas
maintains the highest levels of efficiency and consistency. Lucas is currently delivering up to
£30m of fit out and finishing projects each year.
