The central market of Lome is a very important project for the city. The old market was destroyed by fire and the city needed a new one. Our team won the competition with this project. The concept was to create a market with a central courtyard and different pavilions around for each type of products. We designed the structure, the circulation, the entrances, the roofing and the facades. My role was to help for the design of some pavilions and the roofing structure.
The market welcomes more than 5000 merchants and over 15000 customers daily. It's one of the biggest in West Africa.

Marco Buinhas has started his design practice in 1994, later joining Gonçalo Byrne’s office in Lisbon, Portugal, as an urban designer, leading and participating on a wide
range of studies, projects and competitions throughout Southern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, between 2000 and 2011. Between 2007 and 2008, as the princi-
pal urban designer at Gonçalo Byrne’s office, Marco leads Foster + Partners local design team. He had moved to Western Africa in 2012, working for FCL.AO as a principal
urban designer, being involved in several projects and some collaborative works with Eduardo Souto de Moura. In 2017 Marco joined CPG Consultants Pte. in Singapore as
senior principal urban designer, later becoming vice president of the Urban Planning division, leading design teams in markets such as China, Indonesia and Vietnam. In
2019 he joined Ramboll / Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl as associate director ‐master planning, leading the design on master planning projects in Indonesia and collaborative
work for China market.
Adding to his design practice, Marco started his teaching activities in 1997 as an assistant lecturer with practical classes on design studios at Faculdade de Arquitectura e
Artes da Universidade Lusiada de Lisboa (Lisbon, Portugal), as well as a visiting lecturer at Università degli Studi di Sassari ‐ Dipartimento di Architettura, Design, Urbanistica,
ad Alghero (Sardinia, Italy) and, more recently, as a guest critic at Singapore University of Technology and Design | MIT Design Centre and NUS‐SDE, M.Arch Design Studio
at National University of Singapore. He also has a creative practice as a writer and artist, with published work in Europe, Asia and US of America.
