Current role
My role in the University of Sheffield is to educate students at both
undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the manufacture and provision of
medical devices for dental applications. I have sought to ensure and been
instrumental in developing seminars, tutorials and lectures that are as
interactive as possible in order to engage and motivate learners. My current
responsibilities require the delivery of material to students who may not be
familiar with dental laboratory techniques, medical devices, dental appliances
and dental implants or the application of materials science and therefore tailor
the teaching accordingly, for example, making it relevant to clinical and
laboratory practice. This has given me invaluable insight into the effectiveness of
differing learning models and how to effectively develop and successfully
implement new curricula.
I am Programme Director of two master’s degree courses, Dental Materials
Science and Dental Technology.
Between 2009 and 2011 I was lead seminar facilitator for the Removable
Prosthodontic Dental Technology Course, teaching students the uses and design
of removable partial prostheses. In 2010 I coordinated the course, which
entailed the design and delivery of materials and completion of teaching related
administration. This has enabled me to develop and disseminate to the team I
was leading new assessment methods as well as to deliver more traditional
approaches to removable partial prostheses and associated lab based
technology.
In my current role I lead on a variety of key activities related to the teaching and
research of dental appliances and medical devices, keeping abreast of the current
trends in materials and appliance design.
I formalized my commitment to teaching by undertaking the Postgraduate
Diploma in E-Learning at the University of Sheffield, which I completed in 2003.
This developed my academic knowledge of teaching practice, curriculum design,
development, assessment and evaluation. The curriculum covered small group
teaching, research supervision, large group teaching and reflective practice. In
my desire to continually improve I have continued with my professional
development and completed my Master’s degree in Education in 2016. I also
regularly attend in-house training within the Dental School and the wider
University.

Innovation and development
MSc in Dental Technology: I led the development of this course from its
inception to its commencement in September 2015 with the ‘on target’
recruitment of four students. This course offers a postgraduate certificate for
completing 60 credits, a diploma for 120 credits and an MSc for 180 credits. It is
envisaged that most MSc students will continue to be from overseas. As
Programme Director and course lead I market and recruit for this course in the
various media available.
Member of the Distance Learning Work-stream where our aim is to develop
distance learning courses as part of a new strategy of business expansion and
improved access to education for the School. The group’s first success has been
the roll-out of a Distance Learning Master’s in Dental Public Health which
recruited successfully this academic year. Currently I am making initial steps to
develop a distance learning course for dental technology to add to the DL
portfolio.
I completed my Med in 2016 where my focus has been on developing distance
learning for dental technology with emphasis on internationalization. This will
build on my PG Dip in E-Learning which I completed in 2003.
When I became lead for the Removable Partial Prosthetics course (September
2010) it became apparent that the way in which removable partial prostheses
design had been taught was confusing for the students and the design principles
that are needed were unclear. I therefore instigated a programme of change that
corresponded to the new curriculum in an effort to clarify the basic design
principles that are needed. I and another colleague have given an MSc student
from the Department of Computer Science a project to develop a package that
will be PC or web based to lead the user through the design on a removable
partial denture. The design package will enable each student to competently
design removable partial prostheses for use in clinical situations whilst teaching
them the basic principles that govern their design.

In my current role I am Programme Director of the MSc in Dental
Materials Science and the MSc in Dental Technology. The MSc in Dental
Materials Science has an annual target of 10 students, generating an
income of £175,000. Our target for this course has often been exceeded
and continues to prove to be very popular. This lead role includes the
production of and updating of the MSc in DMS handbook including
general session timetables. Further duties involve liaising with and
directing the tutors that provide and deliver teaching on the course,
coordination of internal review meetings, coordination of module
feedback, review of student’s progress and helping to coordinate and lead
changes to the course as well as sitting on the relevant exam boards and
liaising with our external examiners.
Additionally, I am required to be available for students that are in
difficulties on the MSc in Dental Materials Science course. This role may
involve liaising closely with Student Services and Student Advice and
Welfare and requires an in-depth understanding of the central university
and its formal regulatory framework and the procedures of the school
itself.
Quality assurance in teaching has been a particular focus of the Dental
School. To this end I have taken on responsibility for assuring the quality
of the post-graduate courses where I fulfil the role of lead; ensuring that
student feedback is accurately and duly collected and collated and most
importantly translated into measurable change in either approach or
content to the relevant programme.
Curriculum Vitae Patrick DG
Developing the new MSc in Dental Technology programme in the School
has meant that I have also taken responsibility for the financial planning,
delivery and the meeting of targets for this new enterprise; as well as
identifying and developing emerging markets for this course. This is a
multi-faceted role and has enabled me to become familiar with not only
the quality issues and academic approaches necessary to deliver effective
teaching but also the business of education. The target for the MSc in
Dental Technology for the first entry is 4 students, but they will be
overseas and therefore generate an income of £88,400.

Research, scholarship & publications
I have focused a lot of my early research training on materials research in impact
systems for use in sports mouthguards. This was carried out closely with the
Department of Mechanical Engineering, working collaboratively with Dr Mike
Found in the field of composites and laminated structures, photoelastically
assessing their residual and impact induced stress.
Following on from my research in composite and laminated structures I have
been able to work with the Department of Mechanical Engineering on a number
of occasions investigating stress, either induced by force or as a result of
manufacturing in dental applications such as orthodontic brackets and implants.
Research opportunities have arisen to take this work further with postgraduate
students and staff within the department as I have been a supervisor to Anne
Okioga whose PhD has sought to investigate the use of 3D models to investigate
stress induced by spinal implants utilizing polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and
orthodontic brackets. Through this experience I have been able to identify areas
of dentistry that provide particular scope for investigation where stress/strain
induced via implants and impact are challenges that need addressing. I am now
in the process of setting up a working relationship with Dr Richard Greene and
Dr Rachel Tomlinson that intends to consider these challenges and develop and
provide a mode of investigation to assess stress induced in the spine implants
and in teeth/bone by orthodontic movement and implants.
I am currently jointly supervising two PhD students in the School of Clinical
Dentistry researching the use of novel materials such as PEEK and PEKK and
their manufacturing processes for use in dental applications and restorations.
 Omar Alsadon (PhD) – investigating the use PEEK as a substrate for
dental restorations, jointly with Dr D Wood and Dr S Pollington
 Abdurraouf A Ziglam (PhD) – investigating novel materials, PEEK and
PEKK, for partial denture provision and novel design and manufacturing
procedures for their production (3D printing and milling)
 Omar Alsadon (MPhil) – Investigating and Optimising Composite
Veneered Zirconia Laminates, completed 2012, jointly supervised with Dr
D Wood and Dr A Johnson

I therefore instigated a programme of change that corresponded to the new curriculum in an effort to clarify the basic design principles that are needed. I and another colleague have given an MSc student from the Department of Computer Science a project to develop a package that will be PC or web based to lead the user through the design on a removable partial denture. The design package will enable each student to competently design removable partial prostheses for use in clinical situations whilst teaching them the basic principles that govern their design. In my current role I am Programme Director of the MSc in Dental Materials Science and the MSc in Dental Technology. The MSc in Dental Materials Science has an annual target of 10 students, generating an income of £175,000. Our target for this course has often been exceeded and continues to prove to be very popular. This lead role includes the production of and updating of the MSc in DMS handbook including general session timetables. Further duties involve liaising with and directing the tutors that provide and deliver teaching on the course, coordination of internal review meetings, coordination of module feedback, review of student’s progress and helping to coordinate and lead changes to the course as well as sitting on the relevant exam boards and liaising with our external examiners. Additionally, I am required to be available for students that are in difficulties on the MSc in Dental Materials Science course. This role may involve liaising closely with Student Services and Student Advice and Welfare and requires an in-depth understanding of the central university and its formal regulatory framework and the procedures of the school itself. Quality assurance in teaching has been a particular focus of the Dental School. To this end I have taken on responsibility for assuring the quality of the post-graduate courses where I fulfil the role of lead; ensuring that student feedback is accurately and duly collected and collated and most importantly translated into measurable change in either approach or content to the relevant programme.

  • 6. Curriculum Vitae Patrick DG Research, scholarship & publications I have focused a lot of my early research training on materials research in impact systems for use in sports mouthguards. This was carried out closely with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, working collaboratively with Dr Mike Found in the field of composites and laminated structures, photoelastically assessing their residual and impact induced stress. Following on from my research in composite and laminated structures I have been able to work with the Department of Mechanical Engineering on a number of occasions investigating stress, either induced by force or as a result of manufacturing in dental applications such as orthodontic brackets and implants. Research opportunities have arisen to take this work further with postgraduate students and staff within the department as I have been a supervisor to Anne Okioga whose PhD has sought to investigate the use of 3D models to investigate stress induced by spinal implants utilizing polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and orthodontic brackets. Through this experience I have been able to identify areas of dentistry that provide particular scope for investigation where stress/strain induced via implants and impact are challenges that need addressing. I am now in the process of setting up a working relationship with Dr Richard Greene and Dr Rachel Tomlinson that intends to consider these challenges and develop and provide a mode of investigation to assess stress induced in the spine implants and in teeth/bone by orthodontic movement and implants. I am currently jointly supervising two PhD students in the School of Clinical Dentistry researching the use of novel materials such as PEEK and PEKK and their manufacturing processes for use in dental applications and restorations.  Omar Alsadon (PhD) – investigating the use PEEK as a substrate for dental restorations, jointly with Dr D Wood and Dr S Pollington  Abdurraouf A Ziglam (PhD) – investigating novel materials, PEEK and PEKK, for partial denture provision and novel design and manufacturing procedures for their production (3D printing and milling)  Omar Alsadon (MPhil) – Investigating and Optimising Composite Veneered Zirconia Laminates, completed 2012, jointly supervised with Dr D Wood and Dr A Johnson Publications  Basics of Dental Technology, a Step-by-Step Approach. Johnson, Patrick, Stokes, Wildgoose and Wood. 2011, ISBN 978-1-4051-7875-4  This book has now been translated into Spanish, Chinese and Korean and is now in its second edition – it is Wiley Blackwell’s most popular book on the subject of dental technology and is selling extremely well internationally.
