My main goal is to provide realism. It is for this reason that when directing opera I use an outward to inward approach, meaning I approach a piece broadly and then dissect scenes for subtle nuances. The opposite is true when I approach character development. I encourage my performers to use an inside-‐out approach to make the character real to them, and as a result, real to the audience. I accomplish this by providing proper motivation for the performers so that their performance is not translucent. I strive to add creative aesthetics in all aspects of my direction, especially staging, scenic design and choreography. The audience should never have to assume or accept circumstances given to them. I believe good characterization, movement, acting and staging can result in a production in which the audience can truly believe. In the end, my directing formula is simple. I aim to bring out the brilliance of opera by underscoring sincere emotions, keeping the integrity of the composers intentions, and most importantly, providing the audience with a “wow” factor. Directing Style Achieving goals and setting standards is the minimum for success. I strive for nothing less than greatness. My philosophy is simple: there is nothing more important than getting butts in the seats! This is achieved by encompassing Maria Callas’ famous words “You must stand out”. I have a sizable background in opera, musical theater, operetta and theater outreach. From an artistic perspective, I can offer an optimistic and contemporary approach while not shying away from classicism and traditional concepts. When I debuted as a performer, I fell in love with the drama of opera. Through my performing experience, my eyes were opened to the wide world of theater and its endless and exciting possibilities. My undergraduate training at Florida State University outlined the core and structure of my talents as a singer and director. Earning my Master’s degree from The University of Arizona refined my talents, allowing me to realize my true potential and capabilities as an artist. Professionally, my work is about communication and collaboration. My staging is strategic, while never sacrificing the balance of target, strength, and emotion. Just as in life, balance is key.
