There is a cybersecurity workforce crisis in many state governments due to several factors. States face difficulties hiring qualified cybersecurity workers because of competition from higher-paying private sector jobs and budget constraints that limit state salary offers. Additionally, states have trouble retaining cybersecurity staff due to work environments with outdated technology and few opportunities for career growth. However, others argue there is no unique crisis for states and all employers face a global shortage of cybersecurity skills. To alleviate shortages, states should offer competitive salaries, implement cybersecurity training programs, and use alternative recruitment strategies that emphasize quality of life over compensation.
