A large forest fire occurred in August 2003 in the Crowsnest Pass area of western Canada. The fire was 6kms long, 50ms high and burned 20,000 hectares of forest. While the fire negatively impacted the tourist and timber industries by destroying forest land, it can also create diversity by allowing rich undergrowth to develop.
