Academic advising plays a vital role in helping undergraduate students know themselves, understand others, and apply their knowledge to improve communities. Advisers cannot meet all student needs alone, so they should connect students to specialized campus services. Successful advising requires developing trust with students through repeated interactions, consistency, shared understanding, honesty and interest. Advisers also build relationships across campus through involvement on committees, presentations, and orientation events.
