The Roman Empire split into two parts in the late 4th century AD. The Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476 AD, while the Eastern Roman Empire continued on for another thousand years, eventually falling to the Ottoman Turks in 1453. This division marked the end of a unified Roman state and the beginning of medieval Europe and the Byzantine Empire.
