FROM: Jennifer Marshman
SUBJECT: Secondary English and Communications Teaching Position
Thank you so much for taking time out of your schedule to participate in today’s job fair. As a June, 2016
graduate of Eastern Michigan University (EMU), I am seeking a secondary teaching position in English and/or
Communications.
After completing high school, I was financially independent. It has taken me eight years to complete my
degree, while working to pay for tuition and living expenses. I’ve accomplished my initial goal of obtaining
my teaching degree. I will graduate with a 3.9 GPA.
While student teaching in a Title I school with economic diversity, I readily noticed the improvement in my
students’ knowledge base. I attribute this to cooperative instruction, unique inductive lesson planning and
relatable outside experiences. I included current news stories, personal speakers, such a Holocaust survivor,
and engaging videos. I used SMARTboards, Chromebooks, Google Classroom, Skyweb, and other technology
to support my teaching. I also coached my school’s freshman basketball team.
I participated in a new EMU program called “Urban Place Based Education.” This was a 120-hour program in
a Detroit charter school, where I worked with students who are racially diverse. Most students were ESL
(English as a second language), resulting in my learning different ways to communicate and teach.
Working with EMU’s program “Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs”
(GEAR UP) and tutoring have made me more familiar with Common Core and standardized testing. In
addition to these experiences, I have also earned my Michigan SAT Supervising Training Certificate.
I love to inspire and engage students and look forward to working with students in my life-long career.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. You may reach me at the contact information below to set up an
interview.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Marshman
