Greetings
My name is Robert Young, and I am currently a mechanical engineering student at the University of
Texas of the Permian Basin. I was a mathematics teacher for 17 years, but in 2011 began attending
UTPB to gain a new degree. In 2012 I started working on a degree in Mechanical Engineer and will be
graduating on May 14th
of this year. My expected graduating GPA is 3.75.
My goal after graduation is to gain experience in an energy industry. Being that the oil and gas industry
is currently at a low point, I understand that jobs in the energy industry are few and far between. As
such, I am hoping to gain what experience I can in various ways.
My skills involve more than just engineering class work. They include a high competence in computers,
an ability to work with a variety of people, and a desire to learn. I have always been a person who
enjoys data. I have exceptional skills using Excel and have in the past made my jobs more efficient with
the use of data spreadsheets. I enjoy learning new concepts and procedures and have always strived to
learn quickly and correctly. In my previous job experience, I was hired to do weld maps and feel that I
turned that job into something much more accurate and efficient.
I am also accomplished at working with people in both a team environment and sales environment. I
have sales experience and with my knowledge of thermo‐fluid design I would be an outstanding
representative in the oil and gas industry. I also have experience in design from my class work: my
senior design project was the creation of an automated patio umbrella that tracked the sun, rotating
and pivoting with motors.
Once again, it is my goal to gain experience in any field that will lend itself to the career of an engineer.
