1. CENTRAL COOPERATIVE OF COFFEE GROWERS OF HUILA – COOCENTRAL,
“FROM SEED TO CUP”
COOCENTRAL is an organization that brings together 2700 coffee growers of the
central zone of the Department of Huila, Colombia, and was established on
November 3, 1975. It covers the municipalities of Garzón, Gigante, Tarqui, Pital,
Agrado, Suazo and Guadalupe, a region that produces coffee of special character-
istics desirable for different markets. Since the second half of 2006, COOCEN-
TRAL initiated a voluntary implementation process of Good Agricultural Practices
following UTZ CERTIFIED criteria, through the Program for Quality Certification
and Good Agricultural Practices in Coffee Production, "From seed to cup”. It al-
lowed the promotion of good farming skills and a constant effort to produce and
process a good quality bean.
Today, the UTZ CERTIFIED producers in COOCENTRAL have improved their
farming practices, their business management, and marketing efforts for their cof-
fee. The introduction of this cultural change has faced common challenges of such
initiatives. The support of the cooperative and willingness of producers have made
it possible for these farms and their owners to better understand and implement the
concept of doing things right from the beginning, to receive the benefits of offering
the market a quality product.
