Congaree National Park is the largest tract of old growth bottomland hardwood forest in the United States, located in South Carolina. Though originally called a swamp, the park is actually a floodplain that floods an average of 10 times per year. The park protects over 27,000 acres of forest habitat for a diverse array of wildlife and is a popular destination for hiking, fishing, canoeing, and birdwatching.
