Heat transfer occurs through three mechanisms: conduction, convection, and radiation. This unit focuses on conduction, which is the transfer of heat between objects in direct contact through collisions of molecules within a material without bulk motion. Conduction occurs when there is a temperature difference between two objects and heat flows from the hotter to the colder object through the intervening material until thermal equilibrium is reached.
