Harold Sowards Intro to Criminal Courts February 17, 2014 Comparing Courts The tv show decided to portray the court scene very fast with all the evidence laid out and didn’t lay out the time that the judge determines the facts of the case. Usually during a case that involves a child, there are two sides where both places defend their side. However, considering that in the tv show the family wasn’t known, only the prosecution was present during the decision. However, the fact that the two ladies were allowed to talk as one prosecution isn’t normal, usually there is one person who does the speaking while everyone else who sits at their bench is either there to give advice or are represented during the case. I’m also a bit surprised that there was no guards present during the case, because usually during a case even in non-violent and civil cases, there is a bailiff present somewhere. In the tv show, they failed to show the criminal court case, which would have been a better trial to watch, because all of the evidence was apparently presented to us during the tv show to allow us to make a good judgment about where they were placed. However, in reality, that would never happen, because there would have to be a separate trial for each person and how they would be prosecuted individually and then there would be a trial afterwards for the custody of the baby. Also, the time period involved in the tv show didn’t deal with all the issues that actual courts have to deal with. It happened right after the capture of the two criminals and it didn’t have to wait to be tried, which is different from reality because courts now have a huge caseload to deal with and there isn’t a way for something to be tried that fast without having to first be bumped up or tossed around for a bit.
