Alcohol awareness week 16 – 22 November. Prime
time for drinking is the build up to Christmas.
Christmas parties, Christmas activities and of
course the Christmas holiday. We could also tie this
in with 'Dry January'. Outdoor events in the summer
also mean that more people will be drinking.

We traditionally see an increase in burglaries during
the autumn, most likely caused by the longer, darker
evenings increasing the burglar's opportunity to go
about their criminal activity. There is also an
increased risk in the summer, when windows and
back doors are left open.

One of the most shocking statistics on our UK
Burglary Statistics Infographic is that 59% of
burglaries occur when the victim is still in the
property. There are many different techniques that
burglars will use in this scenario, but one of the
most common is by means of distraction.

Fly-tipping can happen anytime of the year. There
does however seem to be an increasingly large
proportion of fly-tipped waste arising from organised
criminal activity. Also, we can look at specific times
of the year, such as after Christmas, when large
amounts of packaging are disposed of.

Insurance claims data from Norwich Union revealed
that September, October and November were when
most vehicle thefts occurred in the UK. The study,
based on three years of claims, found that despite
an overall decrease year-on-year in the number of
vehicles being stolen, car thefts peaked in the
autumn months. The most obvious reasons are the
shorter daylight hours. Thieves prefer to work in the
dark. Need to review these statistics based on the
latest Elmbridge Borough statistics. Essentially
vehicle crime can happen all throughout the year.
Elmbridge residents are notorious for leaving their
cars un-locked.
