This document proposes a project called Colloquium to decrease loneliness and social isolation among elderly people. The project will connect elderly individuals through a letter writing service by matching people with similar hobbies, experiences and beliefs. It aims to help elderly people cope with difficulties like loss and loneliness by making them aware that their lives were meaningful and aging is an opportunity rather than something bad. The letter writing service will be supplemented by a weekly newsletter containing content tailored for seniors to encourage continued interaction and engagement.

This presentation formed the basis of a webinar delivered through the Community Networks of Specialized Care. The presenter is Keenan Wellar, co-leader and director of communications at LiveWorkPlay in Ottawa. Attending directly and remotely were representatives from about 20 organizations across Ontario.
From 2008-2010, the LiveWorkPlay charitable organization in Ottawa engaged in a successful process of "de-programming" by completing a shift from congregated programs to authentic community-based supports and outcomes based on flexible and individualized person-centered planning. They have been living this new way of being for the past three years and will share what they have learned, with a particular focus on life-changing outcomes for individuals who have an intellectual disability, as well as a "social capital" approach to partnerships with citizens and organizations in support of a more inclusive community.

At the core of this transformation, the agency dramatically expanded the size and scope of its volunteer team. This has changed the organization, it has changed lives, and it is changing the community.

- 2. COLLOQUIUM We propose a project to decrease the distance between the elderly community, crea�ng an innova�ve and suitable (for elderly) program. Suitable in the sense it is based on the exchange of le�ers between two people; and innova�ve because it gathers together two (elderly) people with common experiences, who didn't have the chance to meet previously in life. The feature to match the Sender X Recipient is by their similari�es, such as: hobbies, pains and beliefs in common, in order to help the elderly who go through difficul�es as situa�ons of loss, loneliness, automa�c acceptance, making them aware that the life they built was a worthwhile life and that aging is not a bad thing, but it is a great opportunity to disseminate their life experiences. We hope to be able to connect and encourage socializa�on between them, without having to directly use technology such as cell phones, tablets or computers, something that many experience difficul�es.
- 3. WHAT IS IT? WHO CAN USE THE SERVICE? WHY THE SENIORS? The service is designed for the elderly over 60 years. The Colloquium is a communica�on and interac�on service for elders people. It is possible to connect with other elderly people from experiences and similar tastes, thus promo�ng the decreased loneliness in this age group. In recent years the elders popula�on shows a significant growth in society. As �me passes by, it is possible to perceive an exclusion social and a distance from other people, especially in the senior age. In this way, promo�ng integra�on of this group is essen�al for help in their mental and psychological health.
- 4. HOW DOES IT WORK? 1. 2. 3. 4. The idea is to use the exchange of le�ers since the target public is already familiar with this system. Ini�ally, we would send a le�er explaining the purpose of the service and invi�ng them to be part of this project. A�er the ini�al presenta�on, we would collect data about them (life experiences, hobbies, possible health problems, among others). With the data in hands, the our company would target the elderly with greater compa�bility to establish a rela�onship. A�er fostering a rela�onship with another elderly, we thought about crea�ng weekly newsle�ers to always keep them updated and mo�vated in the project. The content presented in the “Newspaper” would be specially designed for this group, according to their tastes and interests. - 5. WHY COLLOQUIUM? WEEKLY CONTENT Colloquium can be considered a conversa�on between two people or more. Gathering people, above all with knowledge about a subject, in which they discuss points of view, opinions about of a certain theme. Thus, Colloquium was the name thought for our offered service. A space where they can exchange experiences, to get together either physically or by le�er, united by common interests. In addi�on to the le�er service in which we will obtain data and match people to possible new friends (according to similar tastes), we will also create weekly content with specific themes for the public. The contents will have leisure �ps, for the home, informa�on for the age group, life reports, recipes and challenges both in group and individual, so that they are always encouraged to do new things and enjoy life with new friends.
- 6. EXAMPLO On the side is an example of an edi�on of the Colloquium newsle�er. All ar�cles were designed according to the age group of the public. The Weekly Challenge is also suitable for them to be able to carry out the ac�vity and keep themselves ac�ve. The idea is that the almanac is weekly, bringing exclusive content to them.
