This paper critically examines the impact of spam and virus filtering techniques on the e-mail system, noting that most e-mail traffic is now spam or viruses. Various filtering methods are analyzed, revealing that while measures like DNS blackhole lists and greylisting can block a significant portion of junk e-mail, they often introduce new challenges and inefficiencies. The paper concludes that current filtering systems can hinder usability and stability in e-mail communication without adequately addressing spam and virus issues.
