1. “Organized, Ideal, Lead” (OIL)
Introduction
Department of Petrochemical Engineering(JKPK)
was etablished in 1992. Earlier it was know as
Department of Petrochemical Technology(JTP).
JKPK offers courses related to petroleum and
petrochemical industries in Polytecnic Kuching
Sarawak,in line with rapid development of
pertroleum and petrochemical industries.
In July 2010, the department offered only
diploma programme and currently offers Diploma
in Process Engineering(Petrochemical). JKPK is
led by Head of Department, assisted by the
Head of Department, assisted by the Head of
Programme, wth academic staff as subordinates
with various academic backgrounds mainly
Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
and Chemical Engineering; and lab assistants as
supporting staff.

Summary
All of our department academic members possess at the pure
science and engineering disciplines. This range of talent is
used to tackle specific problems of relevance to the petroleum
industry and promotes an applied occupations skill. A
comprehensive teaching program at the Diploma level
complements these study and development activities.
The emphasis is on developing graduates with the skills which
industry needs, as quickly as possible. Consequently a large
percentage of the time is spent in applying the course material
to real oil and gas field data.
Programme Learning Outcome (PLO)
Upon completion of programme, graduates should be able to:
i. Apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering
fundamentals to well defined process(petrochemical)engineering
procedures and practices;
ii. Demonstrate practical skills which includes the ability to
troubleshoot, repair and maintenance work for petrochemical
process equipment;
iii. Communicate effectively with the engineering community and
society at large;
iv. Apply creative and critical thinking in solving problem related to
assigned task;
v. Demonstrate awareness and consideration for societal, health,
safety, legaultural issues and the consequent responsibilities,
taking into account the need for sustainable development;
vi. Recognise the need for professional development and engage in
independent acquisition of new knowledge and skill.
vii. Recognise the need for entrepreneurship.
viii. Demonstrate an understanding of professional ethics,
responsibilities and norms of process(petrochemical) engineering
practices;
ix. Function individually or in teams, effectively, with a capability to
be a leader.
Career in Petrochemical Engineering
Petrochemical engineers are very much at the forefront to improve the
quality of life. There are extensive opportunities in the designing of process
equipment/plants, identifying chemical and physical properties of
substances, researching new products and ensuring equipment/plant
operates optimally.
The main focus of the study program will be the core technical operation in
the Polymer Industries and in the Petrochemical Sector in refineries such as
material handling, fluid flow, head transfer ,filtration, drying, evaporation,
absorption, distillation, condensation, chemical and biochemical reaction in
reactors.
An 18 percent jump in employment is projected for petroleum
engineers, which is faster than average compared to all
occupations.More petroleum engineers be required to find new
methods of extracting more oil from existing sources for developing
new resources. Because the number of job opening is probably
going to exceed the small number of graduates, excellent job
opportunities are expected for petroleum engineers. Jobs are
found around the globe and the best opportunities for petroleum
engineers will likely include work in other countries.
