SolrCloud is a set of features in Apache Solr that enable elastic scaling of search indexes using sharding and replication. In this presentation, Tim Potter will provide an architectural overview of SolrCloud and highlight its most important features. Specifically, Tim covers topics such as: sharding, replication, ZooKeeper fundamentals, leaders/replicas, and failure/recovery scenarios. Any discussion of a complex distributed system would not be complete without a discussion of the CAP theorem. Mr. Potter will describe why Solr is considered a CP system and how that impacts the design of a search application.

Scaling search platforms for serving hundreds of millions of documents with low latency and high throughput workloads at an optimized cost is an extremely hard problem. BloomReach has implemented Sc2, which is an elastic Solr infrastructure for Big Data applications, supporting heterogeneous workloads and hosted in the cloud. It dynamically grows/shrinks search servers to provide application and pipeline level isolation, NRT search and indexing, latency guarantees, and application-specific performance tuning. In addition, it provides various high availability features such as differential real-time streaming, disaster recovery, context aware replication, and automatic shard and replica rebalancing, all with a zero downtime guarantee for all consumers. This infrastructure currently serves hundreds of millions of documents in millisecond response times with a load ranging in the order of 200-300K QPS. This presentation will describe an innovate implementation of scaling Solr in an elastic fashion. It will review the architecture and take a deep dive into how each of these components interact to make the infrastructure truly elastic, real time, and robust while serving latency needs.

Centralized Application Configuration with Spring and Apache Zookeeper

From talk given at Spring One 2gx Dallas, 2014 Application configuration is an evolution. It starts as a hard-coded strings in your application and hopefully progresses to something external, such as a file or system property that can be changed without deployment. But what happens when other enterprise concerns enter the mix, such as audit requirements or access control around who can make changes? How do you maintain the consistency of values across too many application servers to manage at one time from a terminal window? The next step in the application configuration evolution is centralized configuration that can be accessed by your applications as they move through your various environments on their way to production. Such a service transfers the ownership of configuration from the last developer who touched the code to a well-versed application owner who is responsible for the configuration of the application across all environments. At Dealer.com, we have created one such solution that relies on Apache ZooKeeper to handle the storage and coordination of the configuration data and Spring to handle to the retrieval, creation and registration of configured objects in each application. The end result is a transparent framework that provides the same configured objects that could have been created using a Spring configuration, configuration file and property value wiring. This talk will cover both the why and how of our solution, with a focus on how we leveraged the powerful attributes of both Apache ZooKeeper and Spring to rid our application of local configuration files and provide a consistent mechanism for application configuration in our enterprise.

Dissolving the Problem (Making an ACID-Compliant Database Out of Apache Kafka®)

Presenter: Tim Berglund, Senior Director of Developer Experience, Confluent It has become a truism in the past decade that building systems at scale, using non-relational databases, requires giving up on the transactional guarantees afforded by the relational databases of yore. ACID transactional semantics are fine, but we all know you can’t have them all in a distributed system. Or can we? In this talk, I will argue that by designing our systems around a distributed log like Apache Kafka®, we can in fact achieve ACID semantics at scale. We can ensure that distributed write operations can be applied atomically, consistently, in isolation between services, and of course with durability. What seems to be a counterintuitive conclusion ends up being straightforwardly achievable using existing technologies, as an elusive set of properties becomes relatively easy to achieve with the right architectural paradigm underlying the application.

Powering Custom Apps at Facebook using Spark Script Transformation

Script Transformation is an important and growing use-case for Apache Spark at Facebook. Spark’s script transforms allow users to run custom scripts and binaries directly from SQL and serves as an important means of stitching Facebook’s custom business logic with existing data pipelines. Along with Spark SQL + UDFs, a growing number of our custom pipelines leverage Spark’s script transform operator to run user-provided binaries for applications such as indexing, parallel training and inference at scale. Spawning custom processes from the Spark executors introduces new challenges in production ranging from external resources allocation/management, structured data serialization, and external process monitoring. In this session, we will talk about the improvements to Spark SQL (and the resource manager) to support running reliable and performant script transformation pipelines. This includes: 1) cgroup v2 containers for CPU, Memory and IO enforcement, 2) Transform jail for processes namespace management, 3) Support for complex types in Row format delimited SerDe, 4) Protocol Buffers for fast and efficient structured data serialization. Finally, we will conclude by sharing our results, lessons learned and future directions (e.g., transform pipelines resource over-subscription).
