D.I.D in Call of Duty Black Ops I.
By Vince Porter
What is D.I.D?
• Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a
disorder where the subject has multiple
personalities, personas, or alter egos existing
together.
• Another case of this would be the story of Dr.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Plot
• Black Ops Character Alex Mason is an
American soldier who has been through many
hardships and is being interrogated on
suspicion of being a Russian sleeper cell.
• After his imprisonment in a Russian labor
camp, Vorkuta, he escapes with the help of
Viktor Reznov.
Plot
• Reznov seems real to Mason throughout the
game as they strive to thwart their enemies.
• However, Mason was brainwashed while in
Vorkuta and Reznov actually died in the
escape attempt. Reznov then became a
personality of Mason.
Plot
• “Reznov” kills almost all of their enemies but
no one else is around so nobody realizes that
Mason and Reznov are one and the same.
Plot
• Later in the game, Reznov appears to kill Dr.
Fredrich Steiner, a former Nazi scientist that is
working for the Soviets on the development of
NOVA gas.
• Another character, Agent Jason Hudson, is
with Mason and Reznov. In the game, Reznov
is the killer, but Reznov was never there.
Plot
• In the mind of Mason, Reznov has existed for
years. In truth, Reznov has been dead for
years but the ideals of Reznov’s revenge has
been lived out through the brainwashed mind
of Mason.
Psychological? I think so.
• Due to the brainwashing, Mason developed
D.I.D. He saw Reznov, even after death, as a
very real person capable of killing.
• Relating to the case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,
two people, two agendas, one body.
• Reznov is a figment of Mason’s mind but has
become “real” through his disorder.
