The Bottom Breathers Dive Club meeting covered upcoming events including dive trips to Florida Keys in June 2019 and liveaboards to Socorro Island in January 2020 and Guadalupe Island in July 2020. • Listen to briefing (set your compass) and plan your dive
with your buddy
• Dive your plan
• SORTED:
– Signal, Orient, Regulator, Time, Elevate/Equalize/Exhale,
Descend
• Clear ears early and often (no such thing as too much
equalization)
• Descend head up, use fins to slow descent rate, hold
the descent line if available
• Begin adjusting buoyancy before hitting the bottom
(and possibly the reef ...or the silty bottom )

• Check tank pressure frequently (esp if you
haven’t been diving in a while)
• Breathe slowly and deeply. R-E-L-A-X
• Adjust buoyancy in slow and small increments
– Add BCD air small burst at the top of inhale cycle
– Dump BCD air in small amt at bottom of exhale
• Follow plan: turn around at planned tank
pressure or time

• Before ascent, vent air from BCD (DO NOT add air
to go up!)
• STELA:
– Signal, Time, Elevate (BCD hose), Look up, Ascend
slowly (you’ll have to kick a bit)
• Only when a part of you breaks the surface, then
inflate BCD.
• Keep regulator in until you’re sure it’s safe to
remove
• Only remove fins when holding something
attached to the boat (like a line or ladder)

• STAY BACK! Stay clear of the ladder when other divers
are on it
• Make your fins into bracelets for the ladder climb
• Keep your regulator in while climbing the ladder
• Climb slowly – you’re heavier with all the wet gear
• Remove weights from BCD before removing BCD from
the tank
• Weights should rest on the deck, not on the
seat/bench
• Keep your station tidy and compact
• Wrist computers can go around 2nd stage reg hose

• Glenn & his buddy, 35yo, good health, ~50
dives, 1yr certified, love wrecks
• Wreck dive: 400ft long, 50ft wide, sand @
120ft, tied in to line on ship’s bow
• Dive to 100ft, stayed on port side as
recommended in briefing
• Made it to the stern, turned around
• Shortly after turn, 19 mins in, computer low
air warning alarmed; no deco time also short

30. Lesson for Life - 2
• Buddy team signaled ascend; used free
ascent, angled toward anchor line
• Some current, so had to swim hard, using
more air
• Got to line, very low on air, skipped safety stop
• On the boat, they told the crew, exhibited no
symptoms of DCI
• Crew recommended skipping 2nd dive as
precaution; no further issues

31. Lesson for Life - 3
• Good:
– Swam slowly on the wreck
– Informed the crew
– Skipped safety stop due to low air
– Oxygen not administered, instead used observation
for DCI symptoms and cancel 2nd dive
• Bad:
– Didn’t monitor air consumption or no deco time well
– Didn’t account for size of the wreck in dive planning
– Free ascent in current used more air, strained body
which adds to DCI risk
