The second mainland Chinese Church leader to die young within the last two months passed away June 18 in Chengdu. Father Simon Li Zhigang, 48, the bishop candidate of Chengdu diocese, died of liver cancer. He was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer shortly after the bishop election on May 10. His funeral will be held tomorrow. The news shocked many Catholics across China as it was less than two months after the death of Bishop Francis Lu Shouwang of Yichang, central Hubei province. The 45-year-old prelate, who received his episcopal ordination in 2007, died of acute pancreatitis on April 30.

Sister Giuseppina Nicoli was a Daughter of Charity who spent her life in ministry to the poor on the island of Sardinia. She introduced the Sisters to ministering to women in prison and organized youth volunteers. She taught catechism to the poor and illiterate. During World War I she cared for wounded soldiers. She worked with orphaned and homeless street children, teaching them catechism, reading, writing, and a trade. By teaching them about God's love for them, she helped the children recognize their own dignity, despite being denied education and kicked out of their homes.

Government recognizes ‘underground’ bishop
Retired “underground” bishop Joseph Zhu Baoyu of Nanyang from central Henan province was installed as a government-recognized bishop today.
The prelate, 90, who was secretly consecrated in 1995 with Vatican approval, spent many years in detention or undergoing reform-through-labor. Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation last year.
Catholic sources said Bishop Zhu decided to seek recognition from the civil authorities in order to claim back Church properties that were confiscated during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76).
Nanyang diocese has about 20,000 Catholics scattered in Nanyang city, two districts and 11 counties in southwestern Henan.
Bishop John Baptist Yang Xiaoting of Yan’an, vice-president of the government-sanctioned Bishops’ Conference of the Catholic Church in China (BCCCC), officiated at the installation ceremony.
Chinese bishop ordination cancelled
Handan episcopal ordination postponed
The scheduled June 29 ordination of Coadjutor Bishop-elect Joseph Sun Jigen of Handan from northern Hebei province has reportedly been canceled due to pressure from the government.
Bishop-elect Sun, whose appointment was approved by the pope, is currently being “looked after” by government officials in the provincial capital of Shijiazhuang, Church sources say.
Bishop-elect Sun was taken away along with diocesan chancellor Father John Huai Jianting by public security officers as soon as he completed the pre-ordination retreat on June 26 in neighboring Henan province.
They were forced into a police car and when nearing Handan, Father Huai protested and tried to jump off. The officers then transferred him to another police car and sent him back to the diocese. They then proceeded with Bishop-elect Sun to Shijiazhuang alone.
Different outcomes for china ordinations
In southwestern Sichuan province, Leshan diocese today ordained Father Paul Lei Shiyin without a papal mandate in the presence of about 1,000 guests and government officials at the Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Emeishan city.
Bishop Johan Fang Xingyao of Linyi, president of the government-sanctioned Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association (CCPA), was the main celebrant.
Meanwhile, in northern China, Coadjutor Bishop-elect Father Joseph Sun Jigen of Handan has not returned to the diocese since he was taken away forcibly by security officers three days ago.
The diocese posted on its website today a notice to demand the return of Father Sun and a letter to the government protesting against its interference in their ordination.
Since yesterday, some Catholic websites and blogs have been warned to delete posts and comments related to the recent ordinations.
In Leshan diocese, six other participating prelates were Bishops Joseph Li Jing of Ningxia, Joseph Li Shan of Beijing, Joseph Zhao Fengchang of Liaocheng, Paul He Zejiang of Wanzhou (Wanxian), Paul Xiao Zejiang of Guizhou (Guiyang) and Peter Fang Jianping of Tangshan. They all laid hands on the new bishop’s head.
All of the consecrators are Vatican-approved. They have previously participated in other illicit episcopal ordinations, except for Bishops Xiao and Li Jing.
China church names first spokesperson
The government-sanctioned Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association (CCPA) and Bishops’ Conference of the Catholic Church in China (BCCCC) have named a young priest from Beijing as their first ever spokesperson.
The Vatican does not recognize either of the organizations, which were established in 1957 and 1980 respectively.
Conference president, Bishop Joseph Ma Yinglin of Kunming, said having a spokesperson is “a new thing for the China Church, and is essential given the present situation following the Eighth National Congress of Catholic Representatives.”
The congress last December re-elected the association and conference leaderships. Though the Vatican warned that attending it would run counter to communion with the pope, about 300 representatives including 45 bishops were present.
Beijing ‘interferes in church matters’
Leshan diocese is scheduled to ordain a bishop without papal mandate at the Our Lady of Rosary Church in Emeishan city in southwestern Sichuan province tomorrow, the feast of Saints Peter and Paul.
If Father Paul Lei Shiyin, the candidate to be ordained in Leshan, is a legal bishop under China’s regulation and policy as claimed by the “open” Church authorities, it means “the government is interfering into Church matters,” said a Church observer outside China today.
It also reflects a more restrictive policy imposed on the China Church and does not respect the observation given by the Church, he said, noting that there may be dozens more illegitimate bishops coming if the “open” Church is to fill 40 bishop vacancies.
Authorities detain two northern priests
Two priests from Handan in northern Hebei province were reportedly detained at the weekend amid tension between the Church and the government over a canceled episcopal ordination last week.
Bishop-elect Joseph Sun Jigen was supposed to be ordained with a papal mandate on June 29, the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. However, when Handan diocese refused to allow an illicit bishop to attend the event, the bishop elect was taken on June 26 to the provincial capital Shijiazhuang where he has remained. The ordination ceremony was subsequently canceled.
On Saturday morning the religious affairs bureau summoned Father John Huai Jianting, the diocesan chancellor, to discuss matters related to Bishop-elect Sun.
Father Huai disappeared after setting off from the government office in a diocesan car. His driver said the priest was taken away by government officials, according to local sources.
Father Huai has not been heard from since then.

Vatican II
Vatican II was a landmark council that aimed to update and renew the Catholic Church from 1962-1965. It addressed topics like the church's relationship with the modern world, ecumenism, religious freedom, and the role of the laity. Major outcomes included defining the church as the people of God rather than the hierarchy, emphasizing collegiality between the Pope and bishops, encouraging dialogue with other faiths, and renewing the liturgy to be more participatory. Shincheonji
Shincheonji Church of Jesus was established in 1984 in South Korea by Lee Man-hee, who is now in his 80s. The church has over 1,000 locations in South Korea and 240,000 members worldwide, making it an offshoot of Christianity representing around 14-15% of Christians in South Korea. Shincheonji members strongly believe that Lee Man-hee is the second coming of Jesus Christ and will lead the chosen shepherds into heaven on earth. The church recruits new members by sending people to mainstream Protestant churches to try to convert them. On Saturday morning the religious affairs bureau summoned Father John Huai Jianting, the diocesan chancellor, to discuss matters related to Bishop-elect Sun.
Father Huai disappeared after setting off from the government office in a diocesan car. His driver said the priest was taken away by government officials, according to local sources.

Shincheonji
Shincheonji Church of Jesus was established in 1984 in South Korea by Lee Man-hee, who is now in his 80s. The church has over 1,000 locations in South Korea and 240,000 members worldwide, making it an offshoot of Christianity representing around 14-15% of Christians in South Korea. Shincheonji members strongly believe that Lee Man-hee is the second coming of Jesus Christ and will lead the chosen shepherds into heaven on earth. The church recruits new members by sending people to mainstream Protestant churches to try to convert them. Recently, Shincheonji faced criticism for its role in the spread of coronavirus due to a lack of preventive measures.

- 2. Catholics shocked as another leader dies, priests to get health checks. The second mainland Chinese Church leader to die young within the last two months passed away June 18 in Chengdu. Father Simon Li Zhigang, 48, the bishop candidate of Chengdu diocese, died of liver cancer.
- 3. The news shocked many Catholics across China as it was less than two months after the death of Bishop Francis Lu Shouwang of Yichang, central Hubei province. The 45-year-old prelate, who received his episcopal ordination in 2007, died of acute pancreatitis on April 30.
- 4. Father Peter Wu Xianliang of Chengdu, who was ordained a priest together with Father Li more than 20 years ago, said Father Li contributed a lot to the diocese’s development, especially visiting all the churches that suffered from serious damage in the 8.0-magnitude Sichuan earthquake in 2008, to check on repair or reconstruction work.
- 5. Alarmed by Father Li’s illness, Chengdu diocese has arranged for all priests and nuns to have health checkups in late June. “I believe they are generally in good condition, except for some who have irregular meals and rest time due to busy pastoral work,” said Father Wu.
- 6. A bishop in southern China said bishops and other Church leaders are heavily engaged in secular affairs including attending meetings and social activities, which are a Chinese custom. As well as excessive alcohol consumption, working pressure and psychological stress may induce fatal diseases, he said.
- 7. Some other priests admitted they have different degrees of health problem. They usually do not have regular work and rest times. Poor diet and lack of exercise affect their health. “Our psychological quality is also not good enough, as our formation in seminaries can hardly meet today’s needs,” said Father Paul Zhang.
- 8. They hope the sudden deaths of the two middle-aged Church leaders will arouse the awareness of Catholics to care for the physical and psychological health of their pastors. Born in October 1963, Father Li studied at the Sichuan Regional Seminary from 1984-1989.
- 9. After being ordained in 1991, he served as assistant pastor of Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Chengdu city. From 1996, he served as rector of the seminary until he took charge of diocesan affairs in 2000. Chengdu diocese has been a vacant see since its last bishop died in 1998.
