NETWORK DEVICES
• Some of the devices that are required to connect computers or peripherals in
a network are :
• Modem RJ-45 , Ethernet , Hub , Switch , Repair , Bridge , Router and
Gateway .
MODEM
• Modem is derived from the term modulator-demodulator .
• It converts digital signals from the computer to analog from that can be
transmitted over telephone wires and vice versa .
• A modem is a device connecting your home to your internet service provider
(ISP) through a physical connection.
RJ-45
• The RJ-45 [ Registered Jack-45 ] connector is commonly used for computer
network cables .
• RJ45 connectors are twisted-pair connectors with eight positions and eight
contacts (8P8C).
• RJ45 connectors can be wired using two different schemes, T-568 A or B.
ETHERNET NETWORK INTERFACE
CARD
• Ethernet is a networking technology.
• It is used in LAN and MAN networks . Ethernet cards are the essential parts
of a network .
• They are used to connect a computer to another computer or to a server by
using a cable .
• The computers on Ethernet are equipped with a special card called Ethernet
card .
ETHERNET
• An Ethernet card is sometimes known as Network Interface Card [ NIC ] .
• It is used to transmit data from the network to your computer by using a
network cable .
• The cable connection on the Ethernet card is called RJ-45 connection .
HUB
• A hub is the most basic networking device that connects multiple computers
or other networking devices together .
• It is a single point of connection for all devices . It is available with 8 , 12 or
24 ports .
• It connects segments of a LAN . The NIC tranfers data from a computer to
a hub , which then tranfers it to other connected computers .
SWITCH
• A switch in a network tranfers data to a specific computer .
REPEATER
• A repeater is a device that regenerates the incoming signal . Then it places
the same on the communication channel again .
• It is used to increase the length of the network .
• Since it amplifies the signal, it requires a source of electric power.
BRIDGE
• A bridge is a device that is used to link two same networks .
• It reduces the amount of traffic on LAN [ Local Area Network ] as it does
not send all the data packs .
• It can be programmed to reject packets from particular networks .
ROUTER
• A router is used to forward (route) data packets to other networks when the
destination address is outside its network .This process is known as routing .
• It supports different WAN technologies . The most common example is a
home router that is used to share broadband Internet connection .
GATEWAY
• A gateway is used to connect two networks of different types . It acts as an
entrance to another network .
• It can translate information into a format that is understood by the
computer .
• It can be implemented as software or as hardware or as a combination of
both .
TECH FACT
• Data packets consist of data , which travel across a network. A packet is also
referred to as a datagram , segment , block , cell or frame , depending on the
protocol .
• A protocol is a set of rules that govern how data is transmitted and received
in a computer network .
TCP = Transmission Control Protocol
HTTP = HyperText Transfer Protocol
TECH FACT
FTP = File Transfer Protocol
SMTP = Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
