This document is a thesis submitted by Alyxander David May to the University of Lincoln in April 2015 for the degree of Master of Computer Science. The thesis investigates methods for conveying a robot's navigational intent to humans through empirical evaluation of different behaviors. It describes the development of three behaviors - no signal, indicators, and moving the robot's head - to display intent and an experiment with 10 participants to evaluate which behavior was easiest to understand, quickest to understand, and most comfortable. The results found that indicators were preferred over no signal and moving the head for all measures and that participants kept a greater distance from the robot when it used indicators compared to no signal.
