Outputs will guide a discussion on "best management practices" for ecological and public financial sustainability for human civilization.
National datasets cover 30,000 municipalities; 3,000 counties; and 50 States and leverage the US Census of Governments Data
International datasets cover 75,000 global urban extents; 46,000 "county equivalents"; 3,600 "State equivalents", and 195 Nations and leverage NASA SEDAC (Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center) data.
This document provides a preliminary proposal to study polypore fungi in forests on Haida Gwaii. The proposal involves studying polypore biodiversity and abundance across forest stands of different ages and management regimes using GPS-linked photography. It also proposes investigating nutrient transfer between polypore mycelia and ectomycorrhizal fungi using isotope labeling in laboratory microcosms. The proposal notes that polypores play an important role in forest ecology and many have medicinal properties, but they remain understudied.

The document discusses using global data on 16,000 counties worldwide to identify comparable counties to Thurston County and find examples of best practices. It notes that Thurston County has a higher per capita carbon output and lower population density and income compared to some other counties. Specific counties mentioned that could provide lessons include Yamaguchi, Japan; Bonn, Germany; Bergen, Norway; and Aomori, Japan. The document also references data sources for factors like carbon emissions, GDP, land use, and climate that could be used to filter comparable counties.
Law Enforcement Return on Investment in a Comparable Framework: Mason County ...Greg Schundler
This document analyzes the Mason County Sheriff's Department budget through comparisons to other agencies. It finds that Mason County's per-person spending is higher than national and regional averages based on population alone. Other factors like crime rates, population density, and services provided may help explain the difference. The document also reviews Mason County's crime trends over time, finding rates generally increased less than population growth except for motor vehicle theft. A custom group of comparable agencies is identified for more detailed budget analysis.

Port of Olympia: From Extraction Economy to Sustainable GrowthGreg Schundler
The document discusses new economic development strategies for Thurston County that move away from reliance on extraction industries and instead focus on sustainable growth through tourism promotion, parks and beautification, and reducing household energy costs. It notes that restoring the Deschutes Estuary and improving public transit could both boost the economy and mitigate climate change. The document analyzes data showing the potential for increased tourism spending through estuary restoration and improved recreation access. It also examines how promoting local agriculture, smart growth, and ecosystem protection could create a more equitable and climate-resilient economy.
Data Wars: The Force Awakens OlyEcosystems SlidesGreg Schundler
This document summarizes information about the Port of Olympia and issues related to land use and development in Thurston County. It notes that the Port is one of the smallest in the state, imports fracking materials, and loses public money. It discusses the impacts of sprawl in Thurston County over 50 years, including habitat fragmentation and increased car dependency. It provides data on land ownership and use, including the fact that two timber companies own 2/3 of the local watershed. It analyzes trends in logging, exports, and proposes strategies like conservation, restoration, zoning, and supporting local food to guide more sustainable development.
Restoring the Deschutes River Estuary, Olympia, WA Greg Schundler
This document discusses leveraging tourism assets in Olympia and Thurston County by restoring the Deschutes Estuary. It argues that restoration draws tourism, the area is underperforming in tourism compared to other regions, and the estuary is an underused asset. It provides examples showing how restoration increased visits and spending at other sites. The document also notes tourism is rising in the Northwest and that Olympia is well-located to capture more tourism. Outdoor recreation brings significant annual expenditures to the county, and restoring the estuary could increase visits and payments, improving the project's return on investment.
This document discusses the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in natural capital valuation and related topics. It provides an overview of GIS terminology and uses, including for data analysis, design/planning, visualization, and participatory projects. Example GIS applications and projects are also mentioned. The document describes a case study where GIS was used to evaluate the economic benefits of restoring an area's ecosystem services through increased forest, wetland and recreation land. Maps were generated to visualize how the value of ecosystem services from the land could increase under a restoration plan.
Princeton Thesis on Neuroeconomics: Ambition and Reward Greg Schundler
This study examined the association between the Taq A1 allele of the D2DR gene and behaviors in 160 Caucasian undergraduate students at Princeton University. The study found a 16.9% prevalence of the A1 allele, consistent with previous research. Unlike prior research, no associations were found between the A1 allele and addictive behaviors. Interestingly, the study found a negative trend between the A1 allele and alcohol addiction. Additionally, positive trends were found between the A1 allele and academic performance as well as artistic, musical and leadership abilities. The study suggests the A1 allele may confer beneficial behavioral phenotypes rather than only undesirable behaviors.
1) The document proposes identifying underutilized parking areas near ecologically sensitive or public transit areas and converting excess pavement to parks and open spaces.
2) Parking data from Tacoma shows the average occupancy is 50.4% with only 9% of lots over 85% occupied. Maps show opportunities to consolidate lots and add green spaces.
3) Implementing the plan could involve building parking garages for consolidation, adding rain gardens, and using grants to revitalize brownfield sites and engage the community.

Ecoimagination Park aims to transform a former industrial site in Schenectady, New York into a nature park and tourism destination focused on sustainability. The park would feature educational exhibits on human use of resources over time and house small green businesses. By reclaiming the polluted land and promoting environmentalism, the park could boost the local economy through ecotourism and improve Schenectady's reputation. Case studies on similar reclamation projects in other places demonstrate how degraded lands can be restored through careful revegetation and creation of suitable wildlife habitats.
This document discusses a wide range of topics related to energy sources, consumption, infrastructure, and policy. It addresses issues like population growth, carbon emissions, oil and gas reserves, electricity usage, infrastructure costs, renewable energy technologies, pollution controls, and state renewable portfolio standards. Diverse data and perspectives are presented on factors that influence global and national energy systems and the transition to lower-carbon alternatives.
